Tie or Plymouth double chance

It promises to be tense in the Potteries on Saturday as Stoke and Plymouth go in search of what could be a priceless victory in their quest to stay in the Championship.

The Potters are just three points above the relegation zone while the Pilgrims are only one point better off in a congested relegation picture that looks set to go down to the wire with only three games of the campaign remaining.

Team news

Stoke are waiting on Wouter Burger’s fitness after he suffered a knock in their last game against Sheffield Wednesday, but they will definitely be without Lynden Gooch and Ryan Mmaee, both of whom are injured.

Meanwhile, it seems unlikely that Plymouth will make any changes from the team which earned a vital 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Leicester last week as the Pilgrims have no fresh injury or suspension issues.

The stats

Stoke have drawn three of their last four matches.

Nine of Plymouth’s last 10 games have featured fewer than three goals.

Both teams have scored in three of Plymouth’s last 12 games.

The Potters have won just two of their last 14 home league outings.

The Pilgrims have failed to score in just one of their last 10 games on the road.

Prediction

It is almost a case of now or never for both Stoke and Plymouth as the packed Championship relegation picture is on the verge of finally being settled.

Both are in the heart of the fight to stay up and it could be that the Pilgrims will be able to get something from their trip to the Potteries to give them further cause for optimism.

Neil Dewslip’s team received a massive tonic last week when they claimed a 1-0 win over long-time league leaders Leicester and they should be encouraged by Stoke’s poor home record after taking seven points from the three games they have played under their interim manager.

Stoke, who are managed by former Pilgrims boss Steven Schumacher, have allowed themselves to get sucked into trouble and just two wins from their last 14 home matches goes a long way towards explaining their predicament.

They have gained draws in three of their last four games overall so are plainly having issues getting over the line and the fact Argyle have scored in nine of their last 10 away games suggests the Devon outfit can gain at least a point from their long trip to the Midlands.
