Robertson out till after January

Jurgen Klopp has issued an update on the injured left-back Andy Robertson's fitness ahead of Liverpool's upcoming Premier League match with Newcastle. 

The Scottish defender has been unavailable since he underwent shoulder surgery in October. 

Klopp said: "Robbo still needs more range in his shoulder. Obviously it was a big surgery. He's still not even close to team training or whatever. 

"He can do a lot, everything without using the arm properly, which is obviously good, but on the other side shows us we still have a long way to go. 

"For sure, I think the full January he will be [out]. He has to get closer and closer." 

Robertson's lack of availability is a blow to Liverpool at a time when reserve left-back Kostas Tsimikas is out with a broken collarbone. 

Emery confirms Villa's transfer plans

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has detailed the high-flying club's plans for the January transfer window. 

He said: "We are analysing and we are meeting with Monchi and with the owners [to discuss] how we can improve and change something in the squad. 

"I am very happy. We may change something, but not 100 per cent. 

"Only if we can get something to really help for the next month, we are going to do. We are going to be alert, in case we have the possibility to add in our squad, to do it. 

"We are at the moment happy and with the players we have we are getting good results, commitment and competitive structure we are creating. 

"I don’t know if we are getting something or not in the transfers." 

Pochettino talks Kenilworth Road romance

Mauricio Pochettino has spoken about the romance of Luton's Kenilworth Road, ahead of Chelsea's trip there on Saturday. 

Asked whether he enjoyed visiting such stadiums, the Argentine waxed lyrical about the Hatters' home. 

Pochettino said: "Yes, because I am an old man, I am romantic. 

"I love the football of the past and this type of stadium makes you remember when I start to play. You know, the old Wembley. A stadium that smells different. 

"They're maybe not luxury in the way that we recognise luxury today, but these types of stadiums, I think you love to be there because of its history. They are completely different. 

"Today we are living with a million dollar stadium, but if you go there you feel the real football."

Guardiola: Don't be greedy

Pep Guardiola has given his thoughts on Manchester City's Premier League title defence at a time when his side are five points behind leaders Liverpool. 

He said: "Not bad at all. Not bad. It could be better. I think so. It always could be better. 

"Don't be greedy too much. It was good, really good. When we lose a game, we out of the title race. When we win a game, we are there. 

"It's the same thing for our contenders. We have seen so far this year that everything can happen. Maybe results you don't expect." 

Speaking at his press conference before Saturday's match against Sheffield United, the Spanish manager also gave an update on the fitness of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland. 

Guardiola said: "Nothing changed from the last game. We have the same injuries plus John Stones." 

Ten Hag claims Ineos have faith

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he has yet to hold discussions with Manchester United's new investors Ineos but insists they want to work with him. 

Ahead of the clash with Nottingham Forest, he said: "The schedule is so condensed, I didn't have the time so far to speak with them, but it will come. I look forward. They want to work with me, I want to work with them. 

"We will have the conversations, the meetings. We will see. I'm focused on the game so far, so I said no [to discussions]. In this moment I don't want to have distractions. 

"In the coming days, weeks, there will be time for us, then I'll know more. I think it's a good thing, it's very positive. 

"We are looking forward to working together. Ineos wants to work with me in this structure and I want to work with them. We always want to win, it doesn't matter who is the leader. 

"We are appointed here in this area, we need a winning culture no matter who is in the lead, no matter who is the owner. But, of course, owners can inspire you."

Howe hails Joelinton return

Eddie Howe has spoken about the importance of Newcastle midfielder Joelinton to his side. 

The Brazilian returned from injury during the Magpies' 3-1 home defeat against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. 

Howe said: "Whenever you lose a player of Joe's quality you realise how important they are. 

"When he came on, he showed what he brings. 

"His ability in duels and to bring that fight in midfield is something we missed in the game, so fingers crossed we can keep him fit." 

Joelinton has recovered from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the Carabao Cup exit to Chelsea and the away loss to Luton.
