Greece to win 2-0

Greece will feel untouchable after beating England 2-1 at Wembley on Thursday to make it three wins out of three and top Nations League B Group 2.

Republic of Ireland, out for revenge after losing to the Greeks in Dublin last month, are also upbeat after ending a losing run with a 2-1 victory in Finland.

Team news

Greece's two-goal hero against England, Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis, should keep his place under pressure from Celta Vigo's Anastasios Douvikas.

Josh Cullen, just back from injury, played the full 90 for Ireland in Finland, so may well be rested.

Jayson Molumby, Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and one or two others are pressing for starts should Heimir Hallgrimsson want to change his winning team.

The stats

Greece are on a four-match winning streak, hoping to make it five straight wins for the first time since 2016.

The Greeks have played Republic of Ireland six times, winning four, drawing the other two and conceding just one goal.

Three of those wins have come since April 2023, the most recent a 2-0 triumph in Dublin last month.

Ireland's 2-1 win in Finland on Thursday night was just their third success in 19 Nations League fixtures and they have not kept a clean sheet in six matches.

Prediction

England gave Greece a helping hand at Wembley on Thursday night, but that should not detract in any way from the performance of Ivan Jovanovic's side in their stunning 2-1 win and neither should that success be seen as a flash in the pan.

It is played three, won three under Jovanovic, though Greece's fortunes had been on the up previously, with single-goal losses to Netherlands and Germany their only 90-minute losses in the last 12 months.

Devastated at losing a penalty shootout to Georgia to make it to Euro 2024, they are playing like a team on a mission and with enough star quality through their ranks to see off Republic of Ireland in their Piraeus fortress.

Just a month after winning 2-0 in Dublin and completely dominating Heimir Hallgrimsson's side, Greece can repeat the feat on home soil.

Hallgrimsson, under pressure after a pretty ordinary start to his reign, will argue that his team might have turned the corner based on their 2-1 win in Finland on Thursday and they did play well.

However, this looks a step up in class against a confident Greek side who can pull off another 2-0 win.
