Healthy competition

Eddie Howe reckons in-form Newcastle forwards Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak are bringing the best out of each other. 

The Toon boss, 45, has been sharing the load between his two strikers in recent weeks, with Wilson more recently having to settle for a cameo role from the bench.

That has not impacted his scoring form as the England ace has netted eight times in his last seven Premier League appearances, while Isak boasts an impressive seven strikes in nine outings.

Asked if Wilson was benefitting from his reduced minutes, Howe said: "I'm not sure he would agree with that. 

"In three game weeks, if we can manage both players' loads then you would give both a higher chance of staying fit.

"We only have two recognised strikers and both are hugely valued to us. Both have respected the healthy competition between each other and that has contributed greatly to the team. 

"Who knows what happens in the future? It’s all open depending on performances."

Marc Skinner wants his Manchester United squad to enjoy every minute of their Women's Super League title tilt.

United are top of the table with three games to go and welcome Tottenham to Leigh Sports Village on Sunday lunchtime.

It is a huge opportunity for United to land a maiden WSL crown but Skinner, 40, is trying to ease the pressure on his players ahead of the final run-in.

He said: "I'm so looking forward to this one and our players deserve to be performing in these games.

"We've equalled our best-ever points tally with three games to go, we're in an FA Cup final making history, we've had the best clean sheet record, joint-best defensive record, best goalscoring record. 

"For me, this team should go into these last games and enjoy every minute, and I'm going to remind them of that."

Neil Warnock has taken to social media to thank fans after Huddersfield secured Championship safety last night.

The 74-year-old boss came out of retirement to try and save the Terriers back in February and saw his side finish the job with a 1-0 victory over another of his former clubs in Sheffield United.

Despite his success, Warnock will not be staying on as Huddersfield manager — though he has not ruled out a return to the dugout in short-term roles going forward.

No room for error

Julen Lopetegui knows Wolves will need to be at their very best to upset high-flying Aston Villa at Molineux tomorrow.

Only Manchester City and Newcastle have taken more points from the last 10 Premier League fixtures than Unai Emery's Villains, who are now firmly in the top-six race.

And Emery's compatriot Lopetegui accepts that his struggling side have little wriggle room when it comes to performance levels against their Midlands rivals.

He explained: "It's a match against a very good team. They have improved a lot from the first half of the season until now.

"They are a very good team, good players, a very experienced coach. They have a very clear idea and have developed, and after they have the quality to damage you in each moment.

"They have very big players so we have to have confidence in our players, our idea, to be able to beat them. We have to be very close to perfection to play against this kind of team."

Title decider

Owen Coyle believes the pressure will bring the best out of Queen's Park in tonight's Scottish Championship title decider with Dundee.

The division's top two sides meet at Ochilview Park in the final game of the regular season, with the winner assured of both the title and a place in next year's SPL.

If the game ends level, Dundee will finish top of the pile — but that is a situation that suits ex-Burnley boss Coyle just fine.

He said: "Dundee have the fallback of a draw but I'd much rather be going there knowing I had to win the game because of the make-up of my team.

"Gary might see it differently because of the set-up and the type of players he's got. But we're better when we have to go and win. 

"That's when we're at our best and that's why we've won more games than anyone in the league.

"I'd rather try to go to win a game than sit in and try to protect something. That's not what we're about."
