Drinking it in

Wout Weghorst admits he was overcome by emotion after Manchester United’s Carabao Cup success on Sunday evening.

The towering striker, 30, only arrived at Old Trafford in January, terminating a season-long loan with Turkish club Besiktas to instead link up with the Red Devils until the end of the campaign.

Having not pulled up trees with his parent club Burnley last term, Weghorst was a surprise addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad but played a key role in United’s second goal in the 2-0 win against Newcastle at Wembley by releasing Marcus Rashford.

After sealing a first career trophy, the Netherlands international said: "I just took a moment at full-time. I can do really tough or I can do really cool but, yeah, for me this is a childhood dream.

"A childhood dream to play for this amazing club, to play a final and also be important in this final with the second goal.

"So, yeah, I took a moment there and that was the greatest moment of the evening."

The success was all the sweeter for the former Wolfsburg star having lost in two previous cup final appearances earlier in his career.

He added: "In the Netherlands I played two cup finals, lost both of them. This was the third time for me.

"So, yeah, also for me it’s personal and it’s really nice to win a trophy."

Taking aim

Sean Dyche has challenged his Everton squad to share responsibility for their lack of goals this season.

The Toffees are the Premier League’s lowest scorers with just 17 strikes from their 24 outings so far this term.

Another blank against Aston Villa on Saturday saw the Toffees slip back into the relegation zone and Dyche has confirmed that striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will not be fit for Wednesday’s trip to league leaders Arsenal.

However, the ex-Burnley boss refuses to point the finger solely at his forwards when it comes to finding the net with more regularity.

Dyche said: "There’s lots of work to be done. The mentality is, they’re all allowed to score. It’s not about one player. I ask that of them defensively — clean sheets start from the front.

"It’s only fair to ask it the other way around. Players have to take responsibility as a group. We’re making enough chances, it’s about taking enough."

The 51-year-old will be hoping for a repeat of his first game in charge of the Merseysiders, where a James Tarkowski header helped them beat the Gunners 1-0 earlier this month.

Lew knows

Roberto De Zerbi cannot fathom how Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk has never been signed by one of the Premier League’s leading lights.

The Seagulls boss, speaking ahead of his side’s FA Cup fifth round clash at Championship side Stoke tomorrow night, has been hugely impressed by the 31-year-old defender since taking charge at the Amex.

Dunk’s next appearance will be his 400th for Brighton and De Zerbi is confident the once-capped England international could have played at an even higher level if given the opportunity.

The Italian head coach, 43, told reporters: "For me it’s difficult to understand how he has never played for a big team in the Premier League.

"If you ask me what I think about Dunk, I think he’s one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

"This is my opinion but I know well his potential, his standard of performances."

Experienced striker Danny Welbeck is in contention to make a welcome return against the Potters, who sit 17th in the second tier.

Young Lionesses turn to Coates

Emma Coates has been appointed as the new head coach of England Women's Under-23s side.

Coates has already been working within the England coaching structure at St George's Park and will be promoted from her current role as U-19s boss at the end of the domestic campaign.

The FA women's techincal director Kay Cossington and senior boss Sarina Wiegman have worked together on the appointment of Coates, with the intention of providing a sounder progression pathway between the nation's U-23s and senior sides.

Coates said: "It is a really proud moment to become head coach of the Women's U-23s and I would like to thank Kay for the opportunity.

"It is always a privilege to work in the pathway with England teams. This new role is particularly exciting with how closely it is aligned to the seniors. 

"You can see the flurry of promising players that have come through recently and how Sarina is committed to giving them an opportunity if they are performing."

Klinsmann’s Korea change

Jurgen Klinsmann is back in international management after being confirmed as South Korea’s new head coach.

Klinsmann, 58, has enjoyed stints in charge of Germany and the United States previously and takes over from Paulo Bento, who stepped down from his role after the 2022 World Cup.

His first managerial job since leaving Hertha Berlin in 2020, the Tottenham hero will link up with a modern-day Spurs star in the form of Heung-Min Son.

South Korea reached the knockout stage in Qatar before exiting to Brazil 4-1 in the competition’s last 16.

Souness’ CPR plea

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has teamed up with the British Heart Foundation to encourage football fans to learn CPR.

A recent study conducted by the BHF suggested 45% of British adults would not spot signs of a cardiac arrest — something the Scot wants to change.

The 69-year-old wants fans to check out the BHF’s new online tool, RevivR, which teaches a viewer how to perform CPR in just 15 minutes.

Souness said: "CPR is a game changer and could be the most important lesson you ever learn. With RevivR, in just 15 minutes — the length of half-time — you will have the skills to save a life.

"Every fan in every football club across the country can make a difference, so please join the BHF today and let’s unite to create a new team of lifesavers."

Christian Eriksen famously suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020, with the on-site medical team saving the Manchester United midfielder’s life.
