Erik ten Hag has selected Bruno Fernandes as the new Manchester United skipper.

The midfielder takes over the captaincy from Harry Maguire, who was stripped of the role after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

A club statement read: "Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United.

"The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis."

Fernandes has been an ever-present for the Red Devils since signing in January 2020, making 185 appearances after joining from Sporting.

His reign is set to begin in earnest when United host Wolves in their opening fixture of the 2023-24 Premier League season on August 14.

United have been busy in the transfer market this summer, signing Mason Mount from Chelsea to play alongside the 57-cap Portugal international.

And after David de Gea announced that he would be leaving the club after 12 years of service, the 13-time Premier League champions are set to sign Inter Milan stopper Andre Onana as their new No1.

The club have also been linked with Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund as they search for a new long-term centre-forward after last season's departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ten Hag's team are currently on tour in the US, where they will face Arsenal in New Jersey on Saturday.

They also play Wrexham, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Lens and Athletic Bilbao before the competitive action gets under way next month.
