- Germany are eight-time winners of the European Championship, Poland are debuting
- The Germans beat Poland twice in qualifying by an aggregate of 7-2
- Recommended bet: Over 3.5 total goals by Germany

This will be the first major tournament fixture between Germany and Poland and the eight-time European Championship winners could leave the debutantes feeling underprepared.

Poland lost twice against Germany in qualifying and have reached the finals for the first time at the 11th attempt after coming through two play-off rounds.

Nina Patalon's side will have a determination when they run out in St. Gallen, but they should come up well short against a German team with solid ambitions of winning the tournament for the first time since 2013.

Christian Wuck's team are overwhelming favourites to open with a win and they might run in plenty goals.

Team news

Germany are captained by Giulia Gwinn who operates at full-back or in midfield, while Lyon's Sara Dabritz has 108 caps and vast experience.

Defender Franziska Kett and forward Cora Zicai – both 20 – are looking to make an impact, while Lea Schuller, the 27-year-old Bayern Munich striker, spearheads their attack.

Debutants Poland are bringing a youthful look to their squad. The only player aged 30 or above is Kayla Adamek who plays for Ottawa Rapid.

Captain Ewa Pajor, who plays for Barcelona, is one of Europe's most ruthless strikers and is already Poland's all-time leading scorer at the age of 28.

Her clubmate Emilia Szymczak, 19, is one of the talented youngsters in the Polish squad.

The stats

Germany have scored a record 102 goals in Women's European Championships, the only team to register a century.

The Germans have lost just one of 21 group-stage matches at the tournament proper.

This is Poland's first appearance at a major international tournament.

Poland lost all six games in qualifying Group A4, scoring four goals and conceding 17, before beating Romania and Austria in play-off rounds.

Lea Schuller was Germany's top scorer in qualifying with six goals.

Prediction

Major tournament experience could count for a lot in St. Gallen and there has to be a risk the Poles are found wanting in this daunting assignment.

Boss Nina Patalon will take some heart from the fact her side opened the scoring in both qualifying games against the Germans, but worryingly they went on to lose those games 4-1 and 3-1.

The Germans, record eight-time winners, have not tasted victory since 2013 and lost out to England in the final at Wembley in 2022.

They have the quality to make a strong start, with Lea Schuller a major threat in front of goal.

The Germans have scored four or more goals in each of their last five games and can launch their bid for Euro 2025 glory by continuing that streak.
