Under 2.5 goals

Borussia Dortmund are favourites to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup when they clash with Mexican side Monterrey in the early hours of Wednesday.

The German side topped their group and they will be confident of progressing to the next stage, where either Real Madrid or Juventus await.

Team news

Dortmund will likely be without Chelsea-bound Jamie Gittens, who is closing in on a move to the Premier League outfit.

Monterrey have midfielder Jorge Rodriguez back from suspension after he was booked in their first two games at the tournament.

Both Lucas Ocampos and Sergio Canales sat out the 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds, so they are facing a battle to get back into the side for the showdown with Dortmund.

The stats

Monterrey rank 22nd out of the 32 sides at this tournament with 3.2 xG.

Dortmund have one of the strongest defensive records, having conceded just 3.6 xG across their first three matches.

BVB have kept three clean sheets across their last four matches.

German Berterame is the only Monterrey player to top 1.0 xG at the Club World Cup so far, with over half of his total coming in the 4-0 win over Urawa.

Prediction

Monterrey pipped River Plate to second spot in their group, thanks to their 4-0 win over Urawa in their final game.

However, they faced trickier tests in their opening two matches, holding both Inter Milan and River Plate to low-scoring draws in order to stay in contention.

Dortmund were held to a goalless draw by Fluminense in their opening match and the Bundesliga side narrowly edged out Ulsan HD in their final match to secure top spot.

The German outfit were involved in a thriller against Mamelodi Sundowns, winning 4-3, but they should exercise more control over this clash.

Monterrey will likely allow Dortmund to dominate possession, while looking to frustrate their forwards. Led by captain Sergio Ramos, the Mexican outfit have the kind of foundation which can deny elite opposition.

Dortmund head into the game with three clean sheets in four, while two of their three tournament games have featured under 2.5 goals.

Monterrey’s issues are in the final third, so another low-scoring game is the standout bet in this clash.
