- Gauff has reached the final of all three big clay events this year (Madrid, Rome and Paris)
- The American has made the final in Paris before, losing out to Iga Swiatek in 2022
- Recommended bet:
Coco Gauff to win

This year’s French Open women’s singles final sees the top two seeds, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, collide in a repeat of their thrilling Madrid Open final last month.

Sabalenka’s semi-final dismissal of four-time clay queen Iga Swiatek means she is a fairly warm favourite to land her first title in Paris.

But while the three-time Grand Slam champion could be difficult to stop, the fact that this will be Sabalenka’s first time in the final of the French Open means she is automatically too short at the odds on offer, notwithstanding the fact that she is taking on one of the finest talents ever to grace a tennis court.

The stats

Sabalenka and Gauff have each dropped only one set on their paths to the French Open final and that tells you that this year’s Paris clay title match is likely to be competitive.

Sabalenka enjoyed a four-game supremacy in their Madrid final last month — the Paris top seed won 6-3 7-6 in the Spanish capital.

But Gauff, who was also runner-up in Rome to an inspired Jasmine Paolini, is nothing if not consistent and the American is getting stronger and stronger with each tournament she contests right now.

Prediction

There are few chances being taken on Sabalenka by the oddsmakers in the wake of her 7-6 4-6 6-0 semi-final victory over Swiatek and that may mean that punters are getting the opportunity to support a top-quality outsider at a big price in the French Open women’s final.

Sabalenka saw off Amanda Anisimova, Qinwen Zheng and Swiatek in her last three singles outings in Paris and that’s an impressive list. However, it took the top seed time to dominate all three opponents and Gauff may not be as generous, both in terms of who wins the opening set and who wins the third set should the clash go to a decider.

For her part, Gauff ousted in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova, Madison Keys and French wild-card Lois Boisson to progress to the final. Of that trio, only Keys managed to take a set off the second seed, but the Australian Open champion will have had designs on staying unbeaten in the majors this year so there was no lustre lost in that three-set victory.

It’s 5-5 in the personal series between Sabalenka and Gauff, and while the Belarusian has won four of their last six meetings, Gauff triumphed in their first clay encounter so it may not pay to attach too much significance to the favourite’s close triumph in Madrid.

Gauff is within touching distance of reaching the pinnacle in tennis and she is clever enough and playing well enough to pose plenty of problems for her powerful opponent, so back the American to upset the odds and lift the trophy.
