O'Neill was at the helm when Northern Ireland qualified for Euro 2016, ensuring their participation at a major tournament for the first time since the 1986 World Cup.
But he left his position in 2020 and the team has largely struggled in the interim period.
O'Neill has returned as manager but inherited a side on a downward trajectory. Euro 2024 qualifying started positively but 1-0 losses at home to Finland and Kazakhstan and away at Denmark have left them on the back foot.
The Slovenia fixture looks like a must-win but O'Neill's options are limited and he may be forced to lean heavily on experienced defenders Jonny Evans and Craig Cathcart, who have been short of football this summer.
