Champions Manchester City will attempt to end Liverpool’s unbeaten record when they visit Anfield this weekend.

It promises to be another momentous occasion as the Premier League’s last two title winners face off, with the pair boasting some of the best talent in England.

But who would get the nod in a combined side? We stick our neck out and pick an XI.

Goalkeeper: Ederson (Manchester City)

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson often starts when the pair battle it out between the sticks for Brazil but City’s Ederson makes our side.

The 28-year-old has been a mainstay between the sticks as Pep Guardiola's outfit stormed to three Premier League titles in four years, picking up 19 clean sheets last term.

Right-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

In a close fight with England team-mate Kyle Walker, it is Trent Alexander-Arnold who is given the shirt.

Since the start of last season, only Bruno Fernandes (116) and Jack Grealish (99) have created more chances than Alexander-Arnold’s 98, with those two playing considerably further up the pitch than the 22-year-old.

Centre-back: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

One of the simpler decisions to make sees defensive colossus Virgil van Dijk selected at the back.

Liverpool went from strength to strength following the Dutchman’s £75million arrival in January 2018, and he was badly missed last term after suffering a season-ending injury early on.

Centre-back: Ruben Dias (Manchester City)

It is another easy pick as PFA Player of the Year Ruben Dias slots in to partner Van Dijk in defence.

Like the Dutchman's arrival at Anfield, City put the defensive woes they suffered in the previous campaign to bed when he signed from Benfica last summer.

Left-back: Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

In one of the closest battles in the side, Joao Cancelo pips flying Scotsman Andy Robertson to a place in the XI.

The Portuguese is now a consistent starter after making the left-back position his own following his switch from his natural right side.

Defensive midfield: Fabinho (Liverpool)

After having fill in at centre-back last season, Fabinho has reminded fans of his outstanding ability as a deep midfielder.

Nickname the ‘Hoover’ by team-mates, managers all across the Premier League will wish they had a player of Fabinho’s calibre in the centre of the park.

Central midfield: Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)

He is yet to reach the same heights this season but Ilkay Gundogan is well worthy of a place following his 17-goal campaign in 2020-21 which was key in helping City lift another title.

The German edges out Liverpool pair Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson for a place in the team.

Central midfield: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

As close to a shoo-in as you are likely to see, Kevin De Bruyne's regard as one of the world’s best midfield creators sees him as one of the first names in this side.

The Belgian has an incredible 107 assists and a further 68 goals in 268 appearances since joining City in 2015.

Right wing: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Only four players in Premier League history have taken fewer games to score 100 goals, so Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is the first name of this combined XI’s front three.

During his four previous seasons at Liverpool, the Egyptian never scored fewer than 19 Premier League goals and he has continued in that vein this season with five strikes already.

Striker: Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City)

City’s search for a prolific No9 has been well documented, but they may have had one all along as Gabriel Jesus continues to prove his worth.

The Brazilian netted the winner a 1-0 victory over Chelsea last weekend, taking his tally to three goals and three assists this campaign.

Left wing: Jack Grealish (Manchester City)

Adding some creativity and guile to this front line is £100million man Jack Grealish, who is settling in well following his British record move to Man City this summer.

Not only is he firmly cemented in City’s side, he is a key man for Gareth Southgate’s England and will no doubt continue to thrive under Guardiola.
