After the transfer window slammed shut on Friday, several stars are now set for a spell on the sidelines after failing to secure moves away from their clubs.

Premier League outfits have been trying to offload their deadwood and reduce bloated squads as they prepare to submit their official squads for the season.

We take a look at five outcasts who would have benefitted from a transfer this summer.

Jadon Sancho (Manchester United)

After hitting back at criticism from Erik ten Hag at the weekend, Jadon Sancho faces an uncertain future at Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has appeared three times as a substitute for the Red Devils this season but was left out of the squad for the loss at Arsenal.

A switch away from Old Trafford may be the best solution if he is to revive his career following his move to Manchester in 2021.

Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City)

Kalvin Phillips' dream move to Manchester City has not been as glorious as the midfielder had hoped.

Despite his England call-up, the 27-year-old has made just one six-minute cameo in the Premier League and looks surplus to requirements for Pep Guardiola.

If he is willing to sacrifice his bumper contract in Manchester then he may be able to rediscover his best at another club.

Eric Dier (Tottenham)

Eric Dier was a staple in Antonio Conte's Tottenham team last season but is yet to make a matchday squad in the league under Ange Postecoglou.

The 29-year-old is not suited to the Australian's attacking brand of football but refused to leave the club despite interest from Fulham and Bournemouth.

Now he will likely play with the reserves until his contract runs out next summer.

Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

Harry Maguire finds himself in a similar situation to his England team-mate Dier after rejecting a move to West Ham in the summer.

The 57-cap international came on as a substitute in place of the injured Lisandro Martinez against Arsenal but could not make the desired impact as the Gunners stole a late win.

And with Raphael Varane also out of action, the 30-year-old may be called on as a last resort in the backline.

However there is no denying that the seasoned defender is not a mainstay at United and would benefit from a move elsewhere.

Emile Smith-Rowe (Arsenal)

After shining for England Under-21s at the European Championship in the summer, Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe will have been hoping to see more minutes for his club this season.

The 23-year-old is yet to play a minute in the Premier League and only made 12 appearances in 2022-23.

His heart may be with the Gunners but the talented midfielder must surely consider a move away if he is to become a Three Lions regular in the future.
