Bundesliga Matchday 5: Top two meet as Union welcome Bayern to Berlin

An exciting weekend of Bundesliga action sees the top two meet as Union Berlin welcome leaders Bayern Munich to the capital.

Borussia Dortmund will have their work cut out at home to Hoffenheim, while third-placed Freiburg take on struggling Bayer Leverkusen.

We preview all the main games below.

Game of the week: Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Bayern head to fellow early season pace-setters Union looking to continue their strong record against Die Eisernen.

They have never tasted defeat in eight Bundesliga games against the hosts and beat them 4-0 the last time the two met.

But that was Union’s last loss — their 11-game unbeaten run is the current longest in the top-flight and with 10 points from four games, this is their best start to a Bundesliga season.

In fact, it is the first time they have ever entered a slate of weekend fixtures in the top two and they know victory over current holders Bayern would send them top.

The 32-time champions drew 1-1 against Borussia Monchengladbach last time out, but set a record for shots on target in a single game (20) and have netted 13 times in their two away matches this term.

Borussia Dortmund vs Hoffenheim (Friday, 7.30pm)

The weekend kicks off with a tantalising clash between two teams with top-four ambitions in Dortmund and Hoffenheim.

Both sides have nine points from four games, with BVB losing in scarcely believable fashion to Werder Bremen two weeks ago and Hoffenheim falling to Monchengladbach on opening day.

The Black and Yellows will be confident of more success after doing the double over Hoffenheim for the first time last term.

But they have conceded at least two goals in each of the last four games between these two at Signal Iduna Park, while Andrej Kramaric’s eight-strike haul against them is more than any other top-flight player.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Freiburg (Saturday, 2.30pm)

Despite beating Mainz 3-0 last time out, Leverkusen have endured their worst start to a campaign in 41 years.

Now they welcome Freiburg to the Bay Arena desperate to avoid a third straight home defeat for the first time since March 2014.

And the visitors have equaled their best start to a top-flight campaign with three wins in four games, keeping a league-high three clean sheets in the process.

Their 1-0 win over Bochum last week came courtesy of a Vincenzo Grifo strike and if he nets for a third game in a row, he will break the record for most Bundesliga goals by an Italian (38).

Eintracht Frankfurt vs RB Leipzig (Saturday, 5.30pm)

After mixed starts to the season, Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig will both be keen to make it back-to-back victories on Saturday evening.

The hosts beat Werder Bremen 4-3 in a thriller for their first win last week, while Christopher Nkunku’s double at home to Wolfsburg was enough for Leipzig too.

Seven of the last 12 meetings between the two have ended all-square, while Leipzig have never won away at Frankfurt in seven attempts in all competitions.

And given Eintracht have only won one of their last 11 at Deutsche Bank Park, it would not be a surprise to see this one finish level.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Mainz (Sunday, 4.30pm)

Daniel Farke has guided Borussia Monchengladbach to their best start since 1988 and they will aim for a third home win in a row when Mainz come to town.

They are on their longest winning run at home (four matches) in two-and-a-half years and have not picked up three victories in a row to kick off a season at Borussia Park since 2018.

But Mainz boss Bo Svenson is unbeaten against the Foals since taking charge and has seen his side turn their away form around dramatically.

After only taking 11 points on the road last term, victories against Augsburg and Bochum have given them six from a possible six in 2022-23.
