Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday means they now have plenty of work to do to give themselves a chance of European football next season when they head to Brentford for their final Premier League match of the campaign.

The Bees have had an underwhelming season but have hit some decent form as the campaign has drawn to a close and it could turn into an entertaining clash.

Team news

Brentford expect Neal Maupay to be available after he travelled to France in midweek for the birth of his child. Frank Onyeka and Nathan Collins both face fitness tests but Josh Da Silva, Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey and Ben Mee are certain absentees.

Newcastle are likely to have striker Callum Wilson available after recovering a thigh injury and Anthony Gordon hopes to shake off the ankle knock he suffered in Wednesday’s defeat at Old Trafford.

Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Joe Willock, Sandro Tonali, Matt Targett, Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley are all still out for the Magpies, though.

The stats

- Both teams have scored in seven of Newcastle’s last nine away matches

- Four of Newcastle’s last six matches have featured at least four goals

- Brentford have drawn four of their last five home games

- The Bees have lost just one of their last eight matches

- The Magpies have kept just two away clean sheets in the Premier League this season

Seventh place could be enough for Newcastle to get into Europe for next season if Manchester City win next week’s FA Cup final, but Eddie Howe’s men will not want to leave that to chance and will be on the front foot when they head to Brentford for their final-day Premier League showdown.

The Magpies fell to a 3-2 defeat at Manchester United in a pulsating game on Wednesday and it seems likely they will dish up plenty more of the same net-bulging action when they head to west London.

They have been extremely positive on the road, even if their endeavours have met with mixed results.

Entertainment has been in plentiful supply as six of their last nine league games on the road have featured at least five goals and we can expect a similar level of excitement in their final game.

It has not been a great season for Brentford overall, even if there never looked like a realistic danger that they would fall into deep relegation trouble.

Manager Thomas Frank has all his key striking resources back with Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa now all available and they have helped the Bees to finish the campaign in decent form.

A 1-0 loss at Everton has been their only defeat in their final eight games and while they have also been strong at the back, there seems a strong chance that the shackles will come off in the final game and they can contribute strongly to a memorable encounter.
