Ash Barty celebrates after beating Angelique Kerber to reach her maiden Wimbledon final
Ash Barty celebrates after beating Angelique Kerber to reach her maiden Wimbledon final

Our daily Wimbledon round-up brings you all the news from SW19. It is women's semi-final day in South West London today with two huge clashes taking place on Centre Court

Ash Barty vs Angelique Kerber

World No1 Ashleigh Barty booked her spot in Saturday’s Wimbledon final with a straight sets win over Angelique Kerber.

Barty, 25, continued her superb form to take the opener 6-3, before being made to work hard in the second set.

Kerber was on a 10-game winning run on grass and the 2018 champion was not about to take defeat lying down.

She led 5-2 in the second set before Barty recorded back-to-back breaks either side of holding her serve.

It went to a tiebreak and Barty was able to close out the victory with a 7-3 to end the German’s dreams of a second title three years after her first.

Barty said: "This is incredible. This is as close to a good tennis match I will play. Angie brought the best out of me and I knew I had to be at my best.

"Now I get the chance on Saturday to live out a total dream.

"There's a lot of things which have led to this point. To play in the final at Wimbledon on Saturday will be the best thing ever."

The other encounter saw Karolina Pliskova come from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka 5-7 6-4 6-4.

After a shaky start, Pliskova recovered to swing the match back in her favour and secure just her second Grand Slam final appearance, after being a US Open runner up in 2016.

Speaking after the match, Pliskova, 29, said: "I hadn't passed the fourth round (at Wimbledon) and now I'm in the final, I think it's an incredible achievement."

The No8 seed Czech will next face world No1 Ash Barty in Saturday's final, who she has has 2 wins and 5 defeats against already in her career.
