Manchester United want David de Gea to take a huge pay cut next summer — and are ready to make Brighton’s Robert Sanchez their new No1 if he refuses.

Spanish stopper De Gea, 32, has once again revived his Old Trafford career from an ominous position this term, having looked certain to lose his starting spot a few months ago.

Yet his performances in recent weeks, including a marvellous display in United’s 1-0 victory over West Ham, have convinced Erik ten Hag he still has plenty to offer.

The Dutchman wants De Gea tied down to new terms but has been told by club officials that his current £375,000-per-week pay packet is no longer deemed viable.

Should the 45-cap international be unwilling to reduce his weekly wage by at least a third, The Daily Star suggest he will be allowed to end his stay with the Red Devils.

If a new custodian is required next summer, Seagulls star Sanchez is top of Ten Hag’s wish list.

Ironically, the 24-year-old is one of the three keepers who have made Spain’s World Cup squad over De Gea, alongside Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon and Brentford’s David Raya.

However, Sanchez’s fine performances at the Amex have attracted attention from elsewhere too.

The Daily Mirror claim Chelsea are also plotting a summer move, with Blues boss Graham Potter the man who gave Sanchez his breakthrough on the South Coast.

Meanwhile, the latter report also claims United are looking at 19-year-old Benfica prospect Antonio Silva — but the promising defender’s £57million release clause is putting them off.
