Jamie Redknapp has told Antonio Conte his biggest job as new Tottenham manager is to get Harry Kane firing once again.

Spurs have confirmed the former Chelsea manager has taken over following Nuno Espirito Santo's dismissal after a run of five defeats in seven games in the Premier League on Monday.

That led Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to finally turn to Conte, who was close to being appointed in the summer after leaving Serie A champions Inter Milan.

And Redknapp thinks Spurs have made the right call by appointing the former Premier League winner.

The Sky Sports pundit said: "I'm sure a lot of Tottenham fans will be delighted with Conte — he is a first-class manager and a serial winner.

"He did an incredible job with Chelsea and Inter Milan, so he knows the game inside out. He is a brilliant signing for them.

"When you have a manager like Conte, you have to give him the licence to get the players in that he wants and to play the system he wants, you can't interfere, he does things his way."

The form of Kane blighted much of Nuno’s tenure after Spurs' star man tried in vain to leave the club this summer.

The England captain has just one league goal this season and has looked a shadow of his usual self in recent displays.

A talisman for Spurs for many seasons, Redknapp thinks resolving Kane’s situation and getting him firing is key for Conte to achieve success in North London.

He added: "Get Kane going, that is the big thing. If I was a manager at that club right now and I took over the job, (my priority would be) 'how do I get Kane going?'

"I am his biggest fan but he is not playing to the level that he wants at the moment.

"He does not look like he is enjoying his football and that would be your first objective — 'can I get Kane playing well alongside [Heung-Min] Son?'"

It will be Conte’s second job in England after a successful two-year stint in charge of Spurs’ rivals Chelsea in which he won the Premier League in 2016-17.

One player who worked under Conte’s tutelage is Cesc Fabregas, who revealed how impressed he was with his former rivals’ appointment.

Fabregas — who also played for North London foes Arsenal — tweeted: "I hate to say it but what an appointment by Spurs."

Conte's first game in charge will be Spurs' home tie against Vitesse in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.
