After some stunning results on the opening day of the women’s FOOTBALL at Tokyo 2020, it is the turn of the men to take centre stage.

The highlight for Thursday is Brazil’s Group D showdown with Germany at the International Stadium Yokohama, kick-off 8.30pm (12.30pm BST).

Brazil have sent a strong squad to Japan, including several members of the team who lost the Copa America final with Argentina just a couple of weeks ago.

Everton striker Richarlison will lead the attack while Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa is available in midfield, with Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli an option up front.

The surprise inclusion as captain is Dani Alves, 38, the former Barcelona, Juvetnus and Paris Saint-Germain right-back who has 118 full international caps to his name.

Brazil are the holders having beaten Germany on penalties at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

France named 2018 World Cup winner Florian Thauvin and veteran striker André-Pierre Gignac in their squad.

Thauvin plays in Mexico for Tigres UANL so is likely to see some familiar faces in today's opponents when France take on Mexico at Tokyo Stadium (5pm local, 9am BST).

Spain have six of their Euro 2020 squad members on duty, including Barcelona’s 18-year-old midfielder Pedri, and they begin their campaign against Egypt at the Sapporo Dome (4.30pm local, 8.30am BST).

The women’s SOFTBALL enters a second day in Fukushima with hosts Japan looking to follow their 8-1 demolition of Australia by beating Mexico (12pm local, 4am BST), who slumped to a 4-0 defeat to Canada on the opening day.

It is also a training day in the SHOOTING for the men’s and women’s 10m air pistol and 10m air rifle events.
