Dettori heaps praise on Derby winner Kirby 

Frankie Dettori has heaped praise on Derby-winning jockey Adam Kirby, who claimed his first Classic success aboard Adayar at Epsom on Saturday. 

Kirby had been due to ride the highly fancied John Leeper in the race, but he lost that seat to Dettori and was subsequently handed the chance to team up with Adayar in place of dual champion jockey Oisin Murphy. 

Adayar had been seen as Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby's third in the race, but he defied odds of 16/1 to claim the victory by four and a half lengths. 

Dettori could only finish ninth aboard John Leeper, but reflecting on Saturday's race, the Italian feels he played a role in Adayar's victory, although he was also keen to heap praise on Kirby. 

"He thanked me for taking him off John Leeper. I was partly responsible for him winning the Derby," Dettori told Racing TV on Sunday. 

"The Derby was run at a good pace, and the best won on the day. Adam gave him a fantastic ride - and the further they were going, the further away Adam was going. 

"It's a great story, great for Charlie, Godolphin, for everybody. I thought he was a good Derby winner." 

In Swoop claims Chantilly success 

Last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up In Swoop claimed victory in Sunday's Grand Prix de Chantilly for trainer Francis-Henri Graffard.

It was a comfortable win for the odds-on favourite, although the race was not contested at a particularly quick pace, with the four-year-old clocking a time 20 seconds slower than the record for the distance. 

Graffard has no plans to allow In Swoop to rest on his laurels, with the colt set to run in either the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud or the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot at the end of July, while his season will be rounded off with another tilt at the Arc de Triomphe. 

St Mark's Basilica delivers for O'Brien 

St Mark's Basilica handed Aidan O'Brien a first victory in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club following an impressive run at Chantilly on Sunday. 

The son of Siyouni timed his push for the line perfectly thanks to the efficient riding of jockey Ioritz Mendizabal and he joins an elite group of horses to have completed the French 2000 Guineas/Derby double. 

66/1 outsider Sealiway came in second for trainer Fred Rossi, just ahead of the fast-finishing Millebosc, but the race was all about St Mark's Basilica, who Mendizabal has tipped to be a future Arc de Triomphe winner. 

"He's a very good horse," Mendizabal told reporters. "He could be an Arc de Triomphe horse in two or three months. The distance is no problem." 

Winter Power in good shape for Royal Ascot

Trainer Tim Easterby says Winter Power could not be in better shape heading into this month's King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. 

The three-year-old filly was an impressive winner of the Listed Westow Stakes at York last month, with that victory coming off the back of an eye-catching juvenile campaign last year. 

Big things are expected of Winter Power at the Royal meeting and Easterby says she could not be looking any better ahead of her Ascot bow. 

"She's in great order, she couldn't be better," Easterby told reporters. "She was impressive at York, and she's impressive all the time."
