Southampton and West Ham shared the spoils in what was the only goalless draw of Saturday's 3pm Premier League kick-offs.

Hammers talisman Michail Antonio, fresh from making his international debut for Jamaica, was shown a second yellow card deep into second-half stoppage time in the major talking point of the match.

His absence going into their home match against Manchester United will no doubt give boss David Moyes a selection headache — but the Scottish manager had no complaints about the decision to send off his leading goalscorer.

Moyes said: “He was stupid to lunge in but these things in football can happen but we will not make a big deal of it, it looked like the referee got it right.

“I thought today we played some really good football in the first-half but the mid to forward area we did not connect.

“In the games where we scored four we looked as if we could score at will.

“The two games where we got draws were tough games and I still think if any team deserved to win then it was us.”

Chances were at a premium in the first-half, but Lukasz Fabianski was forced to tip the ball over the crossbar from a dangerous Valentino Livramento cross.

Antonio came close to giving the visitors the lead 48 minutes in, but his powerful shot was well saved by Alex McCarthy.

The Saints goalkeeper was in inspired form as he again denied both Jarrod Bowen and then Craig Dawson.

Armando Broja came off of the bench for the hosts and almost gave his side the lead with nine minutes left to play, but his effort struck the post, before having a header blocked on the line in the 92nd minute.

Moussa Djenepo was then the recipient of a strong challenge from Antonio in the 95th minute — and it was enough to convince referee David Coote to show the West Ham No9 a second booking.

Southampton ended a run of 14 Premier League matches without a clean sheet, with this their first since March against Sheffield United.

For the first time since the 1999-00 season, West Ham are unbeaten in their first four Premier League matches.

Michail Antonio was shown just the second red card of his 419 match club career, with his other also coming for the Hammers in February 2017.

Southampton have failed to win any of their opening four Premier League games of a season for the first time since 2016-17, during which they recovered to an eighth place finish.

David Moyes has drawn on each of his last six Premier League visits to Southampton – three with Everton, one with Sunderland and twice with West Ham.
