Fabian Schar celebrates with Newcastle's supporters after scoring a memorable goal against Nottingham Forest

A stunning long-range strike from Fabian Schar set Newcastle on their way to a 2-0 win over Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest.

The Swiss centre-back picked up the ball on the right flank, before running forward and unleashing an unstoppable 58th-minute effort past visiting goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Callum Wilson then converted Joelinton's near-post cross on 78 minutes to put the Magpies in complete control.

Eddie Howe's side could even have added further gloss to the victory when Wilson fired into the side-netting in the game's closing stages.

Magpies boss Howe paid tribute to opening goalscorer Schar afterwards.

He said: "It was an incredible strike from a player that does the unconventional, really.

"A centre-back shooting from that range — I probably wouldn't have reached if that was me playing.

"But he's capable of doing things like that, special moments. I was questioning his decision as he lined up to hit it but I was delighted to see it hit the net.

"We sort of needed a goal like that to break the deadlock because we had created a number of chances and hadn't taken them and it took a long-range goal to get us going."

Forest boss Steve Cooper admitted afterward that his newly-promoted side had not done enough.

He said: "We fell short in our performance today but we live and learn.

"We were not right today in possession, and there were not enough passes when we could get them off and that ultimately cost us the two goals.

"The way we gave up the ball in the play before the goals, that's not the team I want us to be. Newcastle were the better team today and deserved to win.

"They had a lot of the ball and territory, and we're OK with that, although we don't want that too often if we can help it.

"We've felt the difference today, and it is a big difference, but we have to reflect quickly and get used to it."
