Leeds snatched a valuable win after Raphinha coolly converted a late penalty to defeat Crystal Palace.

Marc Guehi led with his arm to block Liam Cooper’s stoppage-time header and referee Kevin Friend was recommended to check the VAR monitor before awarding the spot-kick.

Up stepped the Whites’ No10 and the Brazilian confidently placed the ball past Vicente Guaita, sending Elland Road into raptures.

The hosts had largely dominated proceedings, but Eagles substitute Christian Benteke had two opportunities to win the match for Patrick Vieira’s side.

The Belgian had headed a big chance wide before later seeing his instinctive poke goalwards clawed off the line by Illan Meslier.

After the final whistle, Marcelo Bielsa was pleased to end a run of three games without victory.

He said: "The win was very necessary, we really hoped we could win this game because the results we’d been getting were not good enough.

"The start of the second half was very good, the first half in general was balanced in our favour and the second half we also started well.

"There was a segment where they created danger, but we finished the game well.

"To have a penalty in the last minute in such an important game is not easy, you have to have character and personality to be able to score it.

"In every game we play, all the points are important given the start to the season we’ve had, which hasn’t been good – in every game it’s going to be an extreme necessity for us to get the points."

Did you know?

Leeds have won each of their last six home league games against Crystal Palace, since a 1-0 defeat in the Championship in March 2006.

The Eagles have won just one of their last 13 midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Premier League matches (four draws, eight losses).

The Yorkshire outfit have successfully converted each of their last 15 top-flight penalties, with Alan Smith the last to miss in September 2002 against Blackburn.

Vieira’s side have conceded three goals in the 90th minute or later in the league this campaign – no side has shipped more goals as late in games.

Only Teemu Pukki has scored a higher percentage of his team’s goals (62.5%) in the league this season than Raphinha (46.2%) for Leeds.
