Brighton maintained their perfect start to the 2021-22 season as they cruised to a 2-0 home victory against Watford.

The Seagulls did the damage in the first-half when Shane Duffy headed home a Pascal Gross corner after just 10 minutes.

Brighton doubled their advantage four minutes before the break as Yves Bissouma capitalised on some weak Hornets defending to pinch possession and set up Neal Maupay, who neatly finished past Daniel Bachmann.

Brighton were dealt a blow at the break as goalscorer Maupay was forced off through injury.

His replacement Aaron Connolly had a wonderful opportunity to make it three but shot agonisingly wide from close range.

Emmanuel Dennis had thought he had found a Hornets equaliser on the back of a neat move, only for the assistant referee to flag it offside.

Tom Cleverly was next to test Robert Sanchez in the Brighton goal but the Spaniard saved smartly.

Troy Deeney sent a header just past the post after being found by Josh King with 10 minutes left to play as Watford failed to get off the mark.

Brighton would hold on to maintain their 100% record to the season, with the added boost of a clean sheet to match.

Graham Potter was purring post-game as his side went two-from-two in their opening fixtures of the season.

He said: "(It was a) fantastic header from Duffy, he’s a monster in the box, he is so big and strong to stop, so it was a great goal.

"We played well first half and it was nice to get the second and give us a cushion.

"Watford responded as we anticipated and when we had to defend we did that and did it well.

"We felt like we wanted to get the third and we had a few chances to do that.

"Back to back wins at any stage are hard to achieve, we are in a good place, but it is just a start."

Only Chelsea and Manchester City (13 each) have kept more Premier League clean sheets in 2021 than Brighton (10).

The Hornets have lost seven consecutive top-flight away games for the first time since losing their final seven on the road in 2016-17 under Walter Mazzarri.

Maupay became just the second player to reach the 20-goal mark for Brighton in the Premier League after Glenn Murray (26).

Since making his Premier League debut in August 2017, only Joao Moutinho (13), Trent Alexander-Arnold (13) and Christian Eriksen (12) have more set-play assists than Brighton's Pascal Gross (11).

Brighton have won each of their opening two league games in a season for the first time since the 2015-16 Championship campaign.
