Saints' clash with Preston postponed after fire near St Mary's

Southampton's Championship clash with Preston has been postponed after a major fire broke out near St Mary's.

The Saints were due to kick off at 7.45pm this evening but the blaze at a nearby warehouse has forced them to call the game off.

A club statement said: "Southampton regrets to announce that tonight’s Championship match against Preston has been postponed.

"The decision was made after consultation with the local authorities and emergency services after a major fire broke out in a building next to the St Mary's stadium site earlier today.

"The incident has caused significant disruption in the area with road closures around the stadium still in place as fire crews continue to deal with the situation.

"We are grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL, and while we appreciate the disappointment fans may feel, we hope they will understand the need to put the safety of supporters and staff of both clubs first.

"The game will be postponed to a new date, which will be announced in due course and all tickets for tonight's match will be valid for the rearranged fixture."

A huge plume of smoke was seen engulfing the area at around 1pm, with a spokesperson confirming 18 fire engines were called to attend and that a nearby school was evacuated.

Russell Martin's side are denied the chance to stay within touching distance of promotion rivals Leeds, with the South Coast club six points adrift of the third-placed Whites but with a game in hand.

After an astonishing 25-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end, the Saints have lost four of their last six matches.
