Romeo Lavia scored a stunning equaliser as Southampton beat Chelsea 2-1

Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong were on the scoresheet as Southampton beat Chelsea 2-1 — condemning the Blues to their second defeat in three games.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as Mason Mount squeezed a pass across goal for Raheem Sterling, who took a touch before swivelling and tucking into the corner.

However, the Saints responded just five minutes later as a James Ward-Prowse corner came out to Lavia on the edge of the box and the young midfielder steered a superb effort in from distance to equalise.

And the hosts took the lead just before the break as Romain Perraud's low ball from the left found Armstrong in acres of space in the box, with the striker having time to take a touch before lashing a deflected effort past Edouard Mendy that turned out to be the winner.

Match-winner Armstrong credited his team-mates for digging deep to beat the Blues.

He said: "We knew it would be a tough night tonight. Chelsea are tough opposition but the lads dug deep. Nights like this we won't forget.

"It was frustrating on Saturday [against Manchester United], we had a few chances. That is football.

"The lads are working hard, we have a lot of youth. Romeo has been top class since he has come in. We know how hard the Premier League is but if you work hard and take your chances and that is what we did tonight.

"Great night tonight, we will celebrate tonight."

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel delivered a scathing review of his side's showing, suggesting the Blues have been easy to beat this term.

He said: "We started well in all the games almost but obviously we are struggling with our focus and consistency in matches.

"We struggled to find answers and find the way back if things don't go in our direction. Things did go in our direction today but then we struggled after the equaliser.

"I don't know if concern is the right word. I absolutely dislike to lose, it is the second time this season and I don't think it takes a lot to beat us and this I don't like.

"We try to win matches and the way we do this is something we need to understand as fast as possible. I also don't understand why we are in this situation with injuries to [our] midfielders.

"I think in the first 20 minutes we created half-chances but struggled to score. That is also not brand new for us and that doesn't necessarily have the consequence [of losing] matches, you can win 1-0."

Did you know?

Southampton have earned their first Premier League home win against Chelsea since March 2013 (also 2-1), ending a run of nine such games without a victory against the Blues.

The Blues have lost consecutive league away games for the first time under Tuchel, with the German last losing two successive top-flights games on the road in 2019 at Paris-Saint Germain.

Sterling scored his eighth Premier League goal against Southampton — only against Bournemouth and Watford (both nine) has he netted more in the competition.

At 18 years and 236 days old, Lavia is the fourth-youngest Southampton player to score in the top flight after Michael Obafemi (18y 169d), Dexter Blackstock (18y 177d) and Sam Gallagher (18y 181d).

Since his Premier League debut in March 2012, Sterling has been directly involved in 169 goals (112 goals, 57 assists) — only three players have been involved in more in that time.
