The Italian top flight returns with two high-profile games as Juventus face AC Milan and Udinese play Napoli.

Several teams have been involved in European matches this week, so squad depth and rotation could play a big part in Serie A’s upcoming fixtures.

Friday's game

Sassuolo vs Torino (7.45pm)

Genoa vs Fiorentina (Saturday, 2pm)

This classic Serie A match-up kicks off Saturday’s action and both sides will be looking to lay down a marker at the start of the new season.

Genoa find themselves in the bottom half of the table early on, having lost two and won one of their three games so far.

Highly rated Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic has started the season in good form for Fiorentina with three goals, including two in their win at Atalanta last week.

Each of the last three league games between Genoa and Fiorentina has ended level — a 0-0 followed by two 1-1 draws.

Of the 11 teams Fiorentina have faced at least 100 times in Serie A, Genoa are the side against which they have the highest percentage of draws (38%).

Inter Milan vs Bologna (Saturday, 5pm)

Defending champions Inter have started the season well with two wins and a draw but the Nerazzurri will want to demonstrate they mean business in a game that they will be expected to win.

Argentine attackers Joaquin Correa and Lautaro Martinez each have two goals to their name in the 2021-22 campaign, while midfielder Nicolo Barella is joint-top of the assists charts with three to date.

Bologna’s Lorenzo De Silvestri started the season with a brace against Salernitana and will be looking to get his name on the scoresheet once again.

Inter will need to watch out for the visitors, who have scored in each of their last 10 league games at the San Siro.

On the plus side for Simone Inzaghi’s men, they have netted at least twice in each of their last eight Serie A matches so will be confident of making a mark on Saturday.

Saturday’s other game

Salernitana vs Atalanta (7.45pm)

Lazio vs Cagliari (Sunday, 5pm)

Lazio have scored nine goals in their three games so far, with all of them coming in two matches — a 6-1 win against Spezia and a 3-1 victory at Empoli.

They lost 2-0 to an impressive Milan side last weekend and will be looking to bounce back immediately when they take on the Isolani.

Cagliari, meanwhile, are yet to win this season and claiming all three points against Lazio will be a difficult talk.

Lazio are unbeaten in their last 14 Serie A matches against Walter Mazzarri's new charges (W12 D2) and have won each of their last six league meetings between the two teams.

Juventus vs AC Milan (Sunday, 7.45pm)

Juventus and Milan go into this high-profile match on the back of midweek European away trips.

Stefano Pioli’s men were on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline in Liverpool, while Juve saw off Malmo 3-0 in Sweden.

The two sides have had contrasting starts to the domestic season with Juve yet to win — drawing once and losing twice — while the Rossoneri have won all three of their Serie A games so far.

Juventus have lost (51) and drawn (54) more league matches against Milan than any other club.

Sunday’s other games

Empoli vs Sampdoria (11.30am)

Venezia vs Spezia (2pm)

Hellas Verona vs Roma (5pm)

Udinese vs Napoli (Monday, 7.45pm)

Both these teams have enjoyed good starts to the new season — sitting in the top half of the table and still unbeaten.

Udinese’s only dropped points so far came in a 2-2 draw against Juventus, before they went on to defeat Venezia and Spezia.

But they have lost nine of their last 10 top-flight games against Napoli and have conceded an average of 2.7 goals per match over that period.

Napoli have made an impressive start to the season with a perfect record of three wins from three games, including a victory against Juve.

If the Partenopei make it four wins out of four — as was the case at the start of last season — it would be the first time that they have done so in consecutive Serie A campaigns.
