Arteta applauds predecessor

Ahead of Arsenal's match at Aston Villa, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on opposition manager Unai Emery, who was his predecessor at the Emirates.

Emery's Villa are third in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Arsenal, who they host on Saturday.

Arteta said of his fellow Basque tactician: "I've followed him and seen what he's done for every team, which is remarkable.

"He always improves players, teams and clubs. He's a manager I always admire. He's done it in many countries and at different levels, so I'm very happy for him.

"Tactically, they're very well set up and they're brave to play from the back. They're a constant threat and then you have the atmosphere and intensity of them being at home.

"They fully merit where they are."

Ten Hag tells Rashford to emulate team-mates

Erik ten Hag has instructed Marcus Rashford to follow the example of Manchester United team-mates Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire.

The England forward was on the bench for the Red Devils' 2-1 win over Chelsea having only scored two goals this season.

Ten Hag said: "So Rashford is an incredible, good player. You can't do it with 11 players. He can't play every game.

"He's not in this moment in the form he was last year, but I am sure he will get there.

"What I said about Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire. It's up to them.

"The team will always line themselves up and the best players who form the best team will play."

Poch promises pay off

Mauricio Pochettino has appealed for his Chelsea players to be given time to achieve consistent results.

The Blues were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United on Wednesday night, leaving the Argentine's under-pressure team in 10th place in the Premier League.

Pochettino said: "I think we need to give the players time. There's a lot of players that have arrived. Now is not only to bring a player for eight years.

"It's to work with them and try to put it all in context and create a dynamic. Now the most important thing is to create a platform where they find their place.

"We know what we need to do, we know what we are doing, it's just a matter of time.

"Sometimes that’s six months or maybe one year, but we will arrive at the situation, because we are building something that will pay off.

Emery has learned since Arsenal job

With his Aston Villa side set to face his former club Arsenal on Saturday, Unai Emery has spoken about how he has grown as a manager since his time at the Emirates.

The Spaniard had a spell at Villarreal after his time at the Gunners, where he guided the LaLiga team to a Europa League win.

Asked how he had changed since managing Arsenal, Emery said: "Firstly experience.

"The experiences I had in the past in different countries and different clubs.

"My process as a coach is always to try to learn with the players and coaches I have.

"I always try to get the best professionals around me to add more things with their point of view. The experience is most important."

'Too early' for Kev

Pep Guardiola has issued an update on Kevin de Bruyne's fitness after the midfielder was named in Manchester City's squad for the upcoming Club World Cup.

Speaking before the upcoming trip to Luton, the Spanish manager was not optimistic about the playmaker's chances of being available for the tournament.

Guardiola said: "He's started to run on the pitch but he's not training with us.

"It will be too early I think, but I don't know yet.

"He is so important. I don't want to put pressure on him, he'll be back when he's ready, but we'll have open arms when he is.

"I have to find a way when he's not here to survive.”

Spurs lacking killer instinct

Ange Postecoglou has called for his Tottenham forwards to start killing off games.

Spurs lost 2-1 to West Ham on Thursday night, which was the fifth successive game in which the North Londoners had taken the lead in a match only to drop points.

Postecoglou said: "Like I said in other games, it's important to take advantage of the dominance we have in games and we're not.

"That's keeping oppositions in the game and especially in the second half, we had a couple of defensive lapses, which a team like West Ham will punish you.

"The football, for it to be brilliant, has got to be there in it's entirety. I still think our front third has a lot of work to do and unfortunately that's costing us at the moment in terms of results.

"But that's the challenge for us, we've got to keep pushing on and trying to become better in those areas."

Klopp offers Matip hope

Jurgen Klopp is expecting Liverpool to stand by their defender Joel Matip, after he was ruled out for the season with an ACL injury that he picked up in the recent win over Fulham.

The 32-year-old centre-back is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, which expires in the summer.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace, Klopp said: "I'm pretty sure the club will show its class, just how they should do it. I'm pretty sure the club told him that whatever happens.

"We have to make the decision together with Joel on how it looks after his injury but it's a normal thing to do. He deserves all the support from us and he will get it."

When asked if Matip will be offered a new contract, Klopp responded positively.

He said: "I will say so but it's not my decision on it. I cannot sign the papers."

Strings to Jarrod's Bow

West Ham manager David Moyes has backed Jarrod Bowen's ability to play as a striker, after the forward scored in the 2-1 win at Tottenham on Thursday night.

The England international is known as a winger but has been used more centrally this season by the Hammers, who face Fulham on Sunday.

Moyes said: "I think he can play the centre forward position well, I've thought that for a few years.

"Jarrod has always scored goals, even when he was at Hull before he came here. He's scored a lot of goals coming off wide areas but I think he has showed he can play centrally as well.

"There are games we will play him wide and there are games where we will play him as a centre forward.

"We're really pleased he got another goal away from home. If he keeps these numbers up then hopefully by the end of the season, he'll have a big number of goals."
