Manchester City travel to take on Swansea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening and will be keen to get back on track following the recent loss at Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The Swans beat Norwich at home in the Championship on Saturday but face an altogether different challenge when coming up against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Team news

Swansea will be without centre-back Ricardo Santos due to a knee injury but Malick Yalcouye returns following his suspension. Manager Alan Sheehan has the benefit of picking from a relatively fit squad.

Erling Haaland will be assessed after colliding with the post at Villa Park, although he is likely to be rested for the trip to South Wales regardless. That means Omar Marmoush should be given the nod to lead the line.

Goalkeeper James Trafford is expected to start in the League Cup ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma and could be one of a number of changes Guardiola chooses to make.

Rodri, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Abdukodir Khusanov are all doubts due to injury.

The stats

Swansea have won seven of their 37 meetings with Manchester City with the most recent coming in March 2012 when Luke Moore came off the bench to give them a 1-0 Premier League success.

Manchester City have failed to score more than two goals in eight of their last nine fixtures.

Swansea have managed to keep just one clean sheet since the end of August, drawing 0-0 at Southampton this month.

City’s last trip to Swansea was in February 2021 as the sides met in the FA Cup. The visitors won 3-1 and it marked Guardiola’s 200th victory as manager. It was also the club’s 15th successive triumph in all competitions which saw City break the record for a top-flight team in English football.

Prediction

Manchester City have trounced countless opponents during Guardiola’s time in charge but they have not found the net so freely this season. That means that while they are huge favourites to progress, Swansea might not be in for a hammering.

While Erling Haaland has already scored 15 goals this season, City as a team have netted more than two goals in a match on just three occasions.

In the previous round of the League Cup, Guardiola’s men scored twice to beat Huddersfield and a similar scoreline could be played out at the Liberty Stadium.

For Swansea, this match is a free pass. The majority of home fans will not be expecting a victory but will be keen to see a performance from the team. The Swans’ form has been stuttering with just three wins since the start of September.

A shock victory for Swansea would see the club reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup for the first time since winning the competition in 2013. However, City’s second string should boast too much quality and ease into the next round.
