Marc Guehi has revealed his family were not at Wembley to watch his England debut in the 2-1 victory over Switzerland.

The Crystal Palace centre-back said they get too nervous when he plays, meaning they missed out on his international bow.

Guehi, 21, admitted they were tempted to break their golden rule for the big occasion but opted against doing so.

He said: "Sometimes they get a bit nervous so prefer to watch at home.

"They definitely were tempted, but I know they are watching from afar and supporting me, and I always feel their love in my heart."

The ex-England Under-21s skipper put in a composed display at the heart of the Three Lions' backline, playing the full 90 minutes at the national stadium.

And he admitted that playing regular top-flight football made the transition easy.

Guehi added: "It helps that you are playing Premier League football week-in, week-out.

"If you are constantly playing games at a high level it eases that transition a little bit, but it is still a really high level and you have to adapt.

"The team have made it easy for me in training, and the clear messages you get from the staff are fantastic.

"The senior players and everyone around us have helped us feel comfortable and be ourselves when we are playing."

Boss Gareth Southgate hailed the debutant’s efforts in the low-key friendly with Breel Embolo’s first-half header the only time the defence was breached.

Southgate said: "He's a player that doesn't necessarily grab your attention because he is always in the right position and he is so calm so you don't see the last-ditch challenges or the rash moments.

"I thought that was what he did today. Really composed with his defending and the ball."
