LiveScore Racing Preview: Musselburgh, January 3, 2022
Musselburgh is one of four meetings taking place in the UK and Ireland on Bank Holiday Monday, with six races scheduled at the Scottish racecourse.
The card begins at 1pm and the official going heading into the meeting is described as 'Good To Soft'.
And we have selected five horses for you to follow.
1pm - Betway Heed Your Hunch Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle (2m4f)
DIAMOND STATE has prevailed twice at this course this season, including a C&D success on his latest outing.
The six-year-old is at the top of his game at the moment and he continues to benefit from Conner McCann taking 10lb off his back.
Lucinda Russell's runner is off a career high mark of 114 now but the handicapper may not have got hold of him just yet.
LiveScore selection: Diamond State
1.30pm - Betway Maiden Hurdle (2m4f)
Although GARDE DES CHAMPS remains a maiden after three starts under Rules, there have been enough signs to suggest his first victory is not far away.
He ran well over this C&D last month when finishing second of eight runners, coming home behind a smart horse from Olly Murphy's yard.
This does not look to be a particularly strong race so it's a great opportunity for Keith Dalgleish's gelding to go one place better on his second outing of the season.
LiveScore selection: Garde Des Champs
2pm - Betway Novices' Limited Handicap Chase (2m4½f)
Since switching to chasing, BROADWAY JOE has a 100% record with three wins to his name over fences, including two over this C&D.
He appeared here just before Christmas where he prevailed by just over nine lengths.
The vastly improving novice chaser is now up in class but if he takes another step forward, he should get the same results in this small field, as his rivals all have something to prove over fences.
LiveScore selection: Broadway Joe
3pm - Musselburgh Handicap Chase (3m)
EAGLEHILL made a winning start to the campaign at Fakenham (3m) back in October.
He was helped by his chief rival unseating his rider at the penultimate fence, but he was travelling the best at that stage anyway.
The handicapper has been lenient and has only raised Olly Murphy's chaser 2lb. This is a tougher test but one in which he can pass to record his second victory of the season.
LiveScore selection: Eaglehill
3.30pm - Betway Casino Open National Hunt Flat Race (1m7½f)
HOLMES ST GEORGES made his racecourse debut back in May at Ballinrobe (2m½f).
He travelled well throughout that race but had to settle for fourth place in the end.
It was a debut his connections will have been pleased with as it was testing conditions at the Irish course and Stuart Crawford's runner will have learnt a lot from his opening appearance.
Expect to see him take a big step forward on this latest attempt. James Bowen has been booked for the ride and ground conditions will suit him much better this time around.
LiveScore selection: Holmes St Georges
