All eyes on Euro 2028

England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have announced a joint bid to host Euro 2028.

But that has resulted in proposals to stage the 2030 World Cup being dropped.

A join statement said: "On balance, the five associations have decided to focus solely on an official bid to host Euro 2028 and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 World Cup.

"Hosting a Euros offers a similar return on investment, with the European tournament carrying a far lower delivery cost and the potential of the benefits being realised sooner.

"It would be an honour and a privilege to collectively host Euro 2028 and to welcome all of Europe.

"It would also be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the true impact of hosting a world-class football tournament by driving positive change and leaving a lasting legacy across our communities.

"We believe the UK and the Republic of Ireland can offer UEFA and European football something special in 2028 — a compact and unique five-way hosting collaboration that will provide a great experience for the teams and the fans."

Lamps backs tournament bid

New Everton boss Frank Lampard has thrown his support behind the UK and Ireland's bid to stage Euro 2028.

The former England midfielder, who takes his side to St James' Park tomorrow, said: "I'm more focused on Newcastle than 2028 or 2030.

"But as an Englishman, I loved the good side of the Euros last year.

"I grew up with Euro 96 and it had a huge impression on me as a tournament held in England with some players that were my heroes, so I understand that want and desire of fans.

"Any tournament that could be played in England is great."

Callum has the Wil to return

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is off crutches but it remains unclear when he will return to action.

Wilson, 29, has not featured for the Magpies since picking up a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on December 27.

He is making progress in his recovery but boss Eddie Howe cannot put a date on when the former Bournemouth star will be ready to rejoin Toon's battle to stay in the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's clash with Everton, Howe said: "As always with these types of injuries, it's not absolutely clear.

"We go more on how he feels than a specific time given by physios or doctors.

"It's been slow progress for him — he's off crutches now and walking normally, which is a big step."

Rangnick will not panic

Ralf Rangnick has refused to be drawn on whether a squad overhaul is needed at Manchester United this summer.

The Red Devils were dumped out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough last Friday — raising questions about whether the players are up to the task of bringing silverware to Old Trafford.

But interim boss Rangnick is remaining upbeat, despite his side losing 8-7 on penalties after 90 minutes and extra-time left the fourth-round tie deadlocked at 1-1.

He said: "Overall, the development of the team and our performances in the last couple of weeks have improved, including the Cup game.

"There are two points of criticism that we all have to face. One was we wasted too many clear-cut chances [against Boro] and we should easily have been 3-0 up at half-time. It should have been 6-1 or 6-2.

"And the other one was 10 seconds before we conceded the goal, it was a perfect counter-pressing situation inside their half.

"We took away time but not the ball away from them and eight seconds later we were outnumbered in our box. It was a handball goal and I'm still convinced this goal should have been disallowed, but we shouldn't have allowed this situation.

"Those are the two things I fault with the team.

"We invested the whole week improving our game in possession of the ball and many of those things have been shown by the team."

Eriksen arrives at Brentford

Christian Eriksen has been pictured at Brentford's training ground for the first time since joining the club until the end of the season.

After parting company with Inter Milan following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, the 29-year-old Dane had been training with Ajax.

Bees boss Thomas Frank, who takes his side to Manchester City on Wednesday, does not expect Eriksen to be available for action for a few weeks.

Speaking last week, Frank said: "It is potentially the greatest signing ever for Brentford.

"With the story behind it, it will be an unbelievable day when he steps on the pitch for us.

"We have all seen him for years as one of the best midfielders performing in the Premier League and also for his international team.

"What happened to him last June was crazy, a real shock for all of us, and so whenever the day is we see him out on the pitch again, it will be a big one."

Summerville can leave

Marcelo Bielsa has told winger Crysencio Summerville he can leave Leeds.

Having made just five Premier League appearances as a sub this season, the 20-year-old Dutchman has slapped in a transfer request — and Bielsa will not stand in his way.

The Leeds boss said: "He spoke with me and he told me he wanted to leave. I told him that would not be a problem.

"If a player who is a regular with the first team — not necessarily coming on but thought about regularly — asks me to leave, for me that reason is sufficient."
