Jamie Vardy scored twice in Leicester's 3-0 win over Norwich

Jamie Vardy's double moved Leicester into the Premier League's top 10 with a 3-0 win over bottom side Norwich at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes opened the scoring in the 54th minute as Harvey Barnes found the fit-again Vardy, whose shot took a wicked deflection off Grant Hanley before looping over a stranded Angus Gunn.

The pair combined again just eight minutes later as Barnes slipped in the veteran forward to lash home a fine near-post finish.

Former Canary James Maddison added gloss to the scoreline soon after, thumping into an empty net to end the contest.

Visiting boss Dean Smith hailed the movement of Foxes talisman Vardy.

Smith, 51, said: "I thought we were as good as them in terms of chances created in the first half but when the first goal goes in we could not chase the game.

"We don't need to suffer that goal, it was a good block by Grant Hanley but it was unfortunate in the way it went in.

"We know we are going to come up against teams with more possession and when we concede first we suffer.

"We showed some good stuff in the first half but Jamie Vardy's movement for his two goals was exceptional and that is what you are up against at this level."

Leicester goalscorer Maddison admitted his side had underachieved this season — but are looking toward loftier ambitions next term.

The midfielder, 25, said: "It is always nice to score against any former team, especially against Norwich who hold a special place in my heart. It is a ruthless game, I wish them all the best but I was delighted with the goal.

"We are in a bit of a limbo where we can't get European football or go down. Results of late have not been great so just as professionals we wanted to bounce back and give the best account of ourselves.

"We are just trying to get back to being a team that won the FA Cup and reached Europe. We want to take as many points as we can in the remaining games and finish the season on a positive.

"I think we have underachieved, we had planned to overachieve and roll around with the big boys at the top but it does not always work like that, that is Premier League football."

Did you know?

Norwich have now lost 25 league games this season, only losing more in a single top-flight campaign in 2019-20 (27). They have become the second side to lose at least 25 games in two different Premier League campaigns after Sunderland.

Since 2014-15, only Harry Kane (40) has been directly involved in more Premier League goals against newly-promoted sides than Vardy (34 — 24 goals, 10 assists), while he has now scored 16 goals in his last 14 league games against such sides.

Barnes has provided 20 Premier League assists since the beginning of 2019-20, becoming just the 10th different player to hit that milestone in this time and the fourth Englishman.

Maddison equalled his best top-flight season for goal involvements (14 – nine goals, five assists), having previously done so in 2018-19, while he has scored 15 goals in all competitions for the first time since 2017-18 with Norwich.

Canaries keeper Gunn has conceded 64 goals in 30 league games. The only goalkeeper to concede more in their first 30 appearances in the competition is David Watson (66).
