Laia Aleixandri says Manchester City believe they can upset Chelsea on Sunday

Manchester City are in confident mood ahead of their Women’s Super League crunch clash with leaders Chelsea, according to Laia Aleixandri.

City are the dark horses in a dramatic four-way title tussle, currently enjoying a stunning 13-game unbeaten run in the WSL having lost their opening two outings back in September.

Trailing Chelsea by two points having played a game more going into Sunday’s showdown, Gareth Taylor’s hosts need a victory and Spanish international Aleixandri is bullish on their prospects.

The 22-year-old defender told the club's official website: "I think the team are now very comfortable with the work and all the wins we achieved before.

"I think we are in the right space to continue and we need to win every match — so we are happy to work hard and continue this way.

"We are a really good group of personalities and professionals and that is important to get wins."

Aleixandri, who joined the Citizens from Atletico Madrid last summer, has wasted little time settling into English football.

The No4 believes she and her team-mates will have to take extra care in possession if they are to overcome the reigning champions at the Academy Stadium.

She explained: "I think that all matches are different but we know the way Chelsea play, so that’s good for us and we know all of our strengths too.

"I know that maybe we have to be smart when we lose the ball and press and also keep the ball well. So, that’s what I think will be key for the match."

The youngster has received praise from her manager for her recent form at right-back, despite her preferred position being the centre of defence.

However, Aleixandri insists she is happy to do a job wherever her team needs her most.

She added: "I feel really good. I am enjoying helping the team in each situation that happens and I’m really comfortable and happy to be there.

"It’s a compliment for me to play in different positions, so I’m happy."
