A superb counter-attack goal by Jordan Roberts midway through the second half was enough to give Stevenage a 1-0 win at home to Charlton in League One.

Murphy Cooper rolled the ball out quickly to Roberts who led the charge.

He had Dan Butler outside but chose to go cross-field to Jamie Reid.

His cushioned ball back into the middle found Roberts continuing his run to fire low past Will Mannion.

The second period was much better from Stevenage who upped their game and then ground out a fifth clean sheet in the league.

All Charlton could muster was a shot over the top by Chuks Aneke and a header cleared off the line by Carl Piergianni.

Chances had been limited in the first half.

Charlton had the first, Josh Edwards’ low skimming effort tipped round the post by Cooper.

But the home side finished the stronger, forcing a number of corners, and Piergianni’s unmarked, guided header was only prevented from going in by the head of an Athletic defender.

Butler also had a free-kick curled tamely straight at the keeper.
