Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for Tottenham's Son Heung-min

Son Heung-min has been sensational for Tottenham this season — but could the South Korean star’s time in North London be coming to an end?

Europe’s elite are keeping tabs on the 28-year-old marksman after a prolific campaign, with Bayern Munich reportedly keen on bringing Son back to Germany.

With Spurs’ Champions League qualification prospects uncertain, could a move to the Allianz Arena be on the cards this summer?

Ahead of their quarter-final first-leg with Paris Saint-Germain tonight, we assess the situation.

A stunning season

Son was always likely to be in demand after striking up a formidable partnership with Tottenham talisman Harry Kane.

The dynamic duo broke the Premier League record for the most goal combinations in a single season last month, when Son set up Kane’s second strike against Crystal Palace to make it 14 goal combinations this term.

That total toppled the long-standing previous record of 13, achieved by Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton’s for Blackburn all the way back in 1994-95.

But Son’s individual numbers are impressive too, racking up a career-best 13 league goals and nine assists with eight top-flight matches still remaining.

Contract standoff

As if Son’s form wasn’t enough to pique Bayern’s interest, the Korean icon is yet to agree a new contract with Spurs beyond summer 2023.

That still allows plenty of time for the Londoners to thrash out a deal with the forward’s representatives — but he is yet to sign the £200,000-a-week, five-year deal the club have reportedly tabled.

Son also changed agent last year — signing with CAA Base — which may suggest he’s laying the groundwork for a move.

Kane on the move?

A player of Son’s ilk will be looking for Tottenham to show ambition in the transfer market this summer, after a season in which Jose Mourinho’s men have crashed out of the Europa League in embarrassing fashion against Dinamo Zagreb while also struggling to secure a top-four finish.

But all the talk is currently around who will leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium instead, with reports suggesting Kane is keen on a move to Real Madrid.

If Spurs’ star man was to depart, Son would surely start considering his own future.

A likely transfer?

There remains some doubt as to whether Bayern Munich will be looking to sign Son in the next transfer window —not least from European football expert Kevin Hatchard.

Speaking to talkSPORT last week, he said: “It doesn’t quite feel like a Bayern move to me, per se.

“They’ve obviously spent a lot of money on bringing Leroy Sane in and there are areas of the team that need bolstering more than that.

“I’d be surprised — and I’d be surprised on his part as well. He’s kind of done with Germany.

“He was very good at Bayer Leverkusen and was at Hamburg before then, but his drive was always to get to the Premier League.”

The verdict

There’s no doubt Son would be a good addition for Bayern — particularly if Kingsley Coman departs, as has been rumoured.

But reports linking him with a move to Germany may have more to do with the forward’s contract negotiations than genuine interest from the Bavarians.

Speculation ramps up the pressure on Tottenham to reach an agreement with the player’s representatives, so it does Son no harm to have rumours of a transfer circulating in the media.

Any move from Bayern is more likely to come the following summer when Son’s current deal enters its final year.

But it would be unwise to rule out Spurs’ No7 departing from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium just yet — if Kane leaves North London, Son may feel it’s time to follow.
