Manchester City striker Ellen White provided the goals as Great Britain got off to a flying start at Tokyo 2020 with a 2-0 win over Chile.

White pounced for the opener on 18 minutes, being first to react to a nod back from clubmate Lauren Hemp to convert from close range.

There was a touch of acrobatics to her second after 73 minutes. Lucy Bronze laid the ball up from just inside Chile’s penalty area to find White in space on the far edge of the six-yard box.

The England sharpshooter twisted in mid-air to unleash a bicycle kick which sent the ball bouncing past Chile keeper Christiane Endler.

It was a comfortable win for Team GB and it could have been by a much bigger scoreline if other chances had been taken.

White had an early strike disallowed for offside and Scotland’s Kim Little, a dominant force in midfield, saw a shot blocked just before the break.

Hemp proved to be a nuisance, often running the Chile defence ragged, but she fired over when given a sight of goal in the second half.

Next up is a trip to Sapporo to face hosts Japan on Saturday before a final Group E game against Canada on Tuesday.

Asked about her two-goal contribution, White said: “It felt amazing. I feel really proud to be part of Team GB and scoring and contributing to the team felt amazing.

"We had total respect for Chile and what they could bring to the game.

“We wanted to focus on what we could do. There were moments when we had really great play.

“There are still things we need to work on but we are really pleased with the three points and we're really looking forward to facing Japan next."
