Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his fifth goal in as many Premier League games as Fulham ended Brighton's unbeaten start with a 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage.

The hosts took the lead early in the second half as the ball was worked to Neeskens Kebano following a corner and the winger fizzed a low ball across the face of goal for Mitrovic to fire in at the back post.

In the 55th minute, Fulham doubled their advantage as Lewis Dunk inadvertently diverted Andreas Pereira's low cross into his own net.

Brighton pulled one back just five minutes later as VAR awarded them a penalty — which Alexis Mac Allister dispatched emphatically into the top corner — but they were unable to pull level and slumped to their first defeat of the campaign.

Fulham goalscorer Mitrovic hailed the hard work he and his team-mates put in to secure the result.

He said: "[It was] tough, really tough. We gave everything tonight. In the first half, we didn't play like we wanted.

"In the second half, we tried to press a little higher and scored two goals, then conceded one sloppy one. We died for each other tonight. We deserved three points.

"We wanted to press with more intensity and a little bit more with our two strikers. We did really well especially in the first 15-20 minutes [of the second half].

"We really wanted three points. Sometimes you have to dig in, work hard. We worked so hard for each other. We wanted these three points [more]."

Brighton scorer, Mac Allister, suggested his side did not reach their usual levels of performance.

He said: "It was a tough moment for us. Nine games unbeaten was a good record but we couldn't win. Our first half was not good. We were not at our level.

"When you come to this place you have to be 100% and we weren't. We are really sad but we will keep working and go again on Sunday.

"I think they were two cheap goals. In football, you have to react. We did but it wasn't enough. It is always nice to score a goal but it means nothing because we lost.

"We go match by match and step by step. We will try to rest then prepare to win at home [against Leicester]. We know we have to win with our fans."

Did you know?

Fulham have won eight or more points from their first five Premier League games of a season for the first time since 2012-13 (nine).

Brighton suffered their first top-flight defeat in 10 matches — having won six of their previous nine — and have conceded two or more goals in a league outing for the first time in nine.

Since the start of the 2017-18 season, Dunk has scored more own goals in the Premier League than any other player (six). Only Richard Dunne (10), Martin Skrtel (seven), Phil Jagielka (seven) and Jamie Carragher (seven) have scored more in the competition's history.

Mitrovic's goal was the 100th in all competitions for Fulham, scored against his favourite top-flight opponent. His four strikes against Brighton are more than he has against any other team in the division.

Cottagers manager Marco Silva took charge of his 100th game in the Premier League (34 wins, 21 draws and 45 defeats), becoming the third Portuguese head coach to reach the milestone after Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo.

Since the start of last season, no Brighton player has scored more away goals in the Premier League than Mac Allister's six.
