After breaking his collarbone during the first half of West Ham’s narrow loss at Elland Road, Oliver Scarles faces an extended spell on the sidelines. The teenage left-back has already undergone surgery, but is unlikely to return until December. Fellow defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is also unavailable. 

Academy prospect George Earthy is still nursing a hamstring strain, while Niclas Fullkrug hasn’t featured since the beginning of October. The German international’s continued absence may compel Nuno Espirito Santo to hand a starting berth to Callum Wilson, who has so far been frozen out by the newly appointed West Ham boss. 

Eddie Howe rotated his squad for Newcastle’s EFL Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur, so expect several rested stars to return to the line-up. Joelinton, Anthony Gordon, and Bruno Guimaraes were all introduced from the bench on Wednesday night, while Aaron Ramsdale replaced Nick Pope between the sticks. 

Lewis Hall could play a part at the weekend after returning to full training, although the full-back is unlikely to be fit enough to make the starting XI. Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa are both still struggling with knee issues, with the latter yet to play for the Magpies after his lucrative summer move from Brentford.

West Ham have won only one of their opening nine Premier League contests, overcoming fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest back in August. 

The East Londoners possess the worst defensive record in the division, having shipped 20 goals already. 

After being involved in three 0-0 stalemates before the end of September, Newcastle have netted at least once in each of their last four league outings.

Prediction 

Given the recent goal-shy nature of both teams, Sunday afternoon’s clash is unlikely to be a classic. The Hammers have suffered five of their seven defeats by a margin of two goals or more, but Newcastle do not seem to have sufficient firepower to exploit their opponents’ vulnerabilities. However, the Geordies should still have far too much for the hosts, who already appear to be destined for the drop.  

The recent head-to-head record also suggests an away win is on the cards. West Ham have won just two of the last 12 Premier League meetings between the pair, while Newcastle have lost just once on their eight visits to the London Stadium.
