
Chelsea are considering bringing in a new goalkeeper in January as they look to boost their hopes of silverware, reports TEAMtalk.
The Blues have struggled between the sticks since the departure of Thibaut Courtois for Real Madrid in in 2018, with the likes of Kepa and Robert Sanchez both falling well below the Belgian’s standards.
Djorde Petrovic had looked set to nail down the number one spot for the capital outfit yet the Serbia international was loaned to Strasbourg last season before departing for Bournemouth permanently over the summer.
Filip Jorgensen, meanwhile, joined the club from Villarreal but he has failed to convince head coach Enzo Maresca that he deserves the number one spot.
Chelsea consider summer move for French shotstopper
With Sanchez also struggling, Chelsea had been expected to acquire a new shotstopper in the off-season, and were heavily linked with a move for AC Milan and France number one Mike Maignan.
Chelsea failed to agree a fee with the Italian side for Maignan, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
The Rossoneri are looking to extend the Frenchman’s stay in Italy but it’s likely that Maignan will leave the Serie A giants next summer.
It’s expected that Chelsea will return for Maignan at the end of the season but the Blues are weighing up a short-term option to see out the campaign at Stamford Bridge.
Barcelona outcast tipped for January switch
And it has been reported that Chelsea will consider a loan move for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The German has struggled due to injury in recent months, and made just eight league appearances last season having suffered a patellar tendon rupture last September.
The 33-year-old has been absent since July owing to a back injury and has lost his first team spot to summer signing Joan Garcia.
Barcelona are prepared to sanction Ter Stegen’s departure in January, with the Blues weighing up a loan move for the out-of-favour goalkeeper.
Ter Stegen needs minutes in World Cup year
In a World Cup year, Ter Stegen will hope regular game time will see him force his way back into Julian Nagelsmann’s first team plans for the Germany national team.
The experienced Oliver Baumann is currently first choice for Die Mannschaft, while Alexander Nubel and Finn Dahmen made up the goalkeeping contingent during the October international break.
Chelsea have made an impressive return to action following the domestic hiatus having followed up their 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest last weekend with a resounding 5-1 Champions League triumph over Ajax in midweek.
Victory over the Dutch side saw Chelsea extend their winning run to four matches, a streak they’ll look to continue when they take on Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
