Wiegman hails perfect campaign

Sarina Wiegman admitted she does not think England’s World Cup qualifying campaign could have gone any better after completing a clean sweep of wins with a 10-0 victory over Luxembourg.

A dominant display from the European champions saw them score five goals in each half against the minnows at Stoke’s Bet365 Stadium last night.

Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo, Rachel Daly, Beth Mead, Beth England, Nikita Parris, Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp were all on the scoresheet for the Lionesses as they hit double figures for the fifth time in the campaign.

Reflecting on their perfect record, manager Wiegman said: "I don’t think it could be much better than this, so really happy.

"And I think this camp after the Euros always seems to be a hard one, but I think the team has done a tremendous job coming out of the summer.

"Everyone came in very differently, then you play two games like this, and we knew of course tonight we were so much better than Luxembourg but still, we had to make the tempo of the game, keep the energy in the game.

"That’s what we really wanted to do, and I think that’s what we did in most parts of the game. And a 10-0 is really nice to go home with."

Brighton vs Palace postponed

Brighton's home clash with Crystal Palace later this month has been postponed due to planned rail strikes.

The rivals were due to face off at 3pm on September 17 at the Amex Stadium — the same day that around 40,000 rail workers are expected to walk out.

With no public transport available to supporters, authorities have been unable to allow the fixture to go ahead as planned.

The Premier League have confirmed that a new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

Malouda: What next for Chelsea?

Former Chelsea winger Florent Malouda has described Thomas Tuchel’s sacking as "brutal" and questioned what is next for the West London side.

The German boss, 49, was dismissed following the Blues' disappointing 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League last night.

His departure comes just 100 days into American businessman Todd Boehly’s ownership and less than a week since the end of the transfer window, during which the club spent more than £250million on new signings.

Reflecting on Tuchel’s reign, Malouda told BBC Sport: "It has been a successful era, I am talking about the coach. I have witnessed a lot of finals and a lot of finals won, that shows you the level of performance you have to give.

"You don’t have time, this is the reality. It is very brutal. That is my first impression.

"But as a football club, I know this one is all about winning trophies. Now the question is how. This is a new era. There was a method, whether people liked it or not, that delivered trophies.

"I have been part of the club, I am a fan of Chelsea. I am wondering what happens next. I don’t picture what is next. I just wish the best to the club. I am trying to understand what the strategy is.

"We are talking about a top coach who made a huge impact but it is like it didn’t last. It is not about who is guilty, it is about where we are going next. It is very interesting."

Leno slams Gunners after summer exit

Bernd Leno has shed light on his departure from Arsenal to Fulham
Bernd Leno has shed light on his departure from Arsenal to Fulham

Bernd Leno says "politics" were behind his summer move to Fulham from Arsenal.

The goalkeeper lost his place in the Gunners' starting XI three games into the 2021-22 season following the £30million arrival of Aaron Ramsdale.

A 5-0 defeat to Manchester City saw manager Mikel Arteta drop the German and replace him with Ramsdale, who has remained the first choice between the sticks.

That led Leno to seek a move during the off-season, but the now Cottagers No1 has insisted his omission last term was not down to his performances.

"When I realised that it wasn't about performance or quality, I knew I had to go," he told German newspaper Sport Bild.

"During the preparation I saw that it's not about performance, it's just about politics. It was clear to me — I have to get out of here.

"The most important thing for me is to find my rhythm again.

"Especially after I wasn't actually able to train properly at Arsenal and had no preparation. It's up to me to get the focus back on the national team."

Wales make the nation proud

Wales boss Gemma Grainger celebrates after her team sealed a World Cup play-off spot

Wales boss Gemma Grainger says her team have made the nation proud after they reached the play-offs for a major tournament for the first time.

A goalless home draw with Slovenia ensured a second-placed finish for Wales in World Cup qualifying Group I.

They will be in Friday’s play-off draw as they stand just two games away from a place at the global showpiece in Australia and New Zealand next summer.

"I'm so pleased for the players, they deserve everything that they get," Grainger said.

"It has been an exceptional campaign. We have developed.

"I couldn't be prouder of the players. The players need to take all the credit, the 12,000 supporters here tonight were behind us and we fed off that.

"Now we want even more. We don't mind who we get in the draw, we don't have a preference.

"We will look at the play-offs as game 11 and game 12, but we can at least talk about them now."

Leeds and Barnsley hit with fine

Leeds and Barnsley have been charged for their behaviour in a Carabao Cup clash last month
Leeds and Barnsley have been charged for their behaviour in a Carabao Cup clash last month

Leeds have been hit with their second FA charge in as many days following an exchange with Barnsley in the Carabao Cup last month.

The Yorkshire pair have been fined for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during a flashpoint in their second-round clash, which the Whites won 3-1.

A challenge by Tykes defender Liam Kitching on Cody Drameh led to a large tussle between both sets of players, with a number of yellow cards dished out.

Leeds were ordered to pay £25,000 and Barnsley just £7,500, with both clubs accepting their punishment.

It comes after Jesse Marsch was charged and given a one-match touchline ban after being shown a red card in his side’s 5-2 Premier League defeat at Brentford last Saturday.
