Saka eases World Cup fears

England attacker Bukayo Saka has eased fears he could miss the World Cup through injury by training with his Arsenal team-mates today.

The 21-year-old was forced off in the Gunners' 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, lasting just 27 minutes after taking a knock to his ankle.

With the Three Lions' first World Cup game against Iran less than three weeks away, many were concerned about the winger's availability in Qatar.

Boss Mikel Arteta said he was "hopeful" the talented starlet would be fine, adding: "It was a bad kick.

"Right from the beginning he was limping, but I don’t see any further than that. Let’s see how he is in the next couple of days."

Scotland to host England

England will face Scotland at Hampden Park next September as part of celebrations for the 150th anniversary of their first ever match in 1872.

That game, which ended 0-0 and was played at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow, is recognised by FIFA as the world’s oldest international meeting.

The clash on September 12 will be the 116th between the pair and their first encounter since a goalless draw in June 2021 at Wembley during Euro 2020.

England boss Gareth Southgate said: "Any meeting with Scotland is always special.

"Ourselves and Scotland are the oldest of rivals and passions are sure to be high at Hampden, but this milestone is much bigger than our two nations as it's also an opportunity to celebrate 150 years of international football."

Scotland manager Steve Clarke added: "This fixture is enshrined in history.

"I will be proud to lead our team out at Hampden as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of our national game.

"This next chapter of the oldest rivalry in football will be a special occasion for our players and fans, especially after the recent experience at Wembley during Euro 2020."

Emery begins life at Villa

Unai Emery insisted he has a "big challenge ahead" as he took charge of Aston Villa training for the first time today.

The former Arsenal boss was appointed as Steven Gerrard’s successor last week but work permit issues have prevented him from taking the reins until now.

Ahead of his first training session with his new players, the 50-year-old tweeted: "Day 1. Big challenge ahead. As big as the greatness of Aston Villa."

Emery will walk out at Villa Park for the first time as boss on Sunday, as the Villans host Manchester United.

He faces the Red Devils away in the Carabao Cup four days later before heading to Brighton for the final game before the World Cup on November 13.

FA Cup hero Radford dies

Ronnie Radford, scorer of one of the most iconic goals in FA Cup history, has died at the age of 79.

Radford powered home a stunning 30-yard strike on a muddy pitch as Hereford recorded a memorable giant-killing against Newcastle in the third round at Edgar Street in 1972.

A Hereford statement read: "Ronnie is not just a part of Hereford folklore, he is a part of football history.

"We will always keep Ronnie close to our hearts at Edgar Street."

Spurs play to win

Ex-Tottenham attacker Rafael van der Vaart believes Spurs are developing a "winner’s mentality" under boss Antonio Conte after recovering from a poor first-half display to beat Marseille and top their Champions League group.

Trailing at the break and having lost Heung-Min Son to a head injury, the North Londoners managed to turn it around in the second half despite being far from their best during a tense evening at the Stade Velodrome.

Clement Lenglet’s header cancelled out Chancel Mbemba’s effort, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg struck with virtually the last kick of the game to seal top spot in Group D.

Reviewing the performance, Van der Vaart said: "When I think about Spurs, I think about nice, attacking football, but now I see a team who says it's all about winning.

"They don't see it as scoring a lot of goals. It's about keeping the nil at one end and then trying to score one or two at the other end. You can call it a winner's mentality.

"They don't care if they play well or entertain their supporters.

"Making it through was the most important thing. They aren't playing the best football at the minute, but as long as you're winning, everybody is happy."

Sampaoli: City deserve Champions League

Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli believes Manchester City deserve to win the Champions League.

A maiden success in Europe's elite competition still alludes Pep Guardiola’s men despite dominating domestically, winning four of the last five Premier League titles.

They were beaten by Chelsea in the final of the 2020-21 campaign, before losing to Real Madrid in the semi-final last term.

Sampaoli takes new side Sevilla to the Etihad this evening in their final Champions League group game.

The former Argentina boss, 62, said: "In the project of Guardiola I think City have made great achievements.

"I think he would make a huge difference to any team in the world, but the Champions League is a very individual, special tournament.

"They have not managed to win it yet, but from the way they play, they may have deserved to have won it more than once.

"I think they are better than any team in England and some teams in the Champions League, but football is a funny game. The best teams don’t necessarily win trophies all the time.

"But I really value what City have achieved, not just in one year, but in the whole period of Guardiola managing here. He has shown consistency that no team in the world has been able to reproduce at any point."
