Maguire booed in United friendly

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was booed by some supporters as the Red Devils beat Crystal Palace 3-1 in a pre-season friendly in Melbourne.

Maguire was selected to start in the United defence after it was confirmed he will remain as skipper next season by new boss Erik ten Hag.

Goals from Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho made it three wins from three in pre-season as their new era under the Dutchman continued.

But the discontent voiced by a small section of fans inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground towards the England defender, reportedly each time he touched the ball, turned out to be one of the game’s key talking points.

On the booing, midfielder Donny van de Beek said: "I didn't know really what happened. But if I saw the game today I think Harry was playing really well.

"He was aggressive, he got so many balls, so that means he has a big personality.

"He has a lot of experience, so I think that's positive what he [showed], his performance today."

Steffen seals Boro switch

Middlesbrough have announced the loan signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

The USA international, 27, joined the Citizens in 2019 and has spent much of his time as a back-up to No1 stopper Ederson, making just 21 appearances overall.

But with a World Cup later this year, Steffen has opted to make a switch to the Championship outfit in search of regular first-team minutes.

Boro manager Chris Wilder said: "I think it’s a big coup for us and so I’m delighted we’ve brought Zack in.

"We knew we had to improve the goalkeeping department. We brought in Liam Roberts and now we’re adding Zack who has just signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Man City.

"Man City don’t hand out four-and-a-half-year contracts if they don’t think anything of them.

"Everyone knows his situation, he needed to play because of the World Cup. He had an agreement with Man City, but he could have easily stayed there and sat comfortably as their No2. He wanted to go out and he’s agreed to come here."

PSG unveil new away strip

Paris Saint-Germain have unveiled their away kit for the 2022-23 season.

The latest of Nike’s Air Jordan designs will see the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar turn out in grey on the road.

Accompanied by a black stripe and trim on the shorts, the kit pays tribute to the Parc des Princes as it celebrates its 50th anniversary as the home of Les Parisiens.

Fans will get their first glimpse of the kit in action in their pre-season clash against defending J-League champions Kawasaki Frontale in Japan tomorrow.

Hampton misses out

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has been ruled of England’s Women’s Euro 2022 quarter-final after testing positive for coronavirus.

The Aston Villa stopper, 21, has been an unused substitute for the Lionesses’ three group-stage wins so far, with Mary Earps preferred between the sticks.

She joins head coach Sarina Wiegman in returning a positive Covid-19 test, while defender Lotte Wubben-Moy had a similar fate following their second game against Norway.

Wiegman missed England’s 5-0 win over Northern Ireland and could be absent from the touchline again for Wednesday’s clash against Spain.

Norway boss leaves after Euros exit

Martin Sjogren has left his post as Norway boss

Norway manager Martin Sjogren has resigned following their group-stage exit at Women’s Euro 2022.

The Scandinavian nation endured another disappointing campaign after finishing third in Group A with two defeats from three games — including an 8-0 hammering by England.

A 1-0 defeat to Austria in the following clash ensured they made an early exit for the second consecutive European Championship despite being earmarked as one of the favourites pre-tournament.

It signals the end of Sjogren’s five-year reign in charge of the national side, with his assistant Anders Jacobson also departing.

Sjogren said in a statement: "The expectations before this championship were clear and we had high ambitions to go far.

"When the results did not match the expectations, the natural solution is that we now go our separate ways."
