Guard of honour for Ange

Pep Guardiola has hailed "exceptional" Ange Postecoglou following his appointment as Tottenham's new manager.

The 57-year-old will become the first Australian to coach in the Premier League after signing a four-year deal in North London following a trophy-laden spell at Celtic.

Postecoglou previously had a three-year stint at Yokohama F. Marinos — part-owned by the City Football Group — and the two bosses crossed paths during a friendly in Tokyo in 2019.

Speaking ahead of City's Champions League final against Inter Milan on Saturday, Guardiola said: "Another exceptional manager is coming.

"I was lucky to meet him in Tokyo years ago when he was manager at Yokohama, one of our clubs in the City Football Group, and it was an interesting chat.

"I have a good relationship with the owner of Celtic. He did an incredible job [at Celtic] and he will do an incredible job for Spurs."

Roma and England striker Tammy Abraham has undergone successful surgery for his ACL injury.

The 25-year-old sustained the issue in Roma's final game of the season against Spezia last Sunday, with the Italian club indicating he will be out for an "indefinite period".

He will now begin his recovery after going under the knife In London today.

A statement said: "Tammy Abraham underwent reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Wednesday. 

"The operation was performed by Dr Andy Williams at London's Cromwell Hospital, with Roma head of medical Massimo Manara in attendance, and was a complete success. 

"The player will remain at the London clinic for a few days before beginning the rehabilitation programme drawn up by the club's medical staff. 

"Wishing you a speedy recovery, Tammy!"

Tony Cottee insists West Ham supporters "deserve" to see their team lift a European trophy tonight.

The Hammers are bidding to win their first silverware in 43 years when they face Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final in Prague this evening.

And ex-Irons striker Cottee, 57, believes it is about time his former club ended that trophy drought.

As supporters gathered in the Czech capital, he told BBC Radio 5 Live: "This a reward for the fans' unwavering support. They deserve to win a tournament.

"Getting to a European final is a success for players and fans. They travel everywhere home and away and often do not get to see what they want, but they still attend the next week.

"When you think about all the problems they had when leaving the Boleyn Ground, if you had said to the supporters then to be patient and just wait a few years, then they would have said: 'Wow!'

"West Ham fans are very loyal and are desperate for some success. They are a great credit to English football."

The Argentine World Cup winner joined the Old Lady from Paris Saint-Germain last summer before scoring eight goals in 40 appearances.

The 35-year-old, who is now a free agent, wrote on Instagram: "This is the end of a difficult and complicated period.

"I leave with the bitter taste of not having achieved it but with the happiness of taking with me many friends from the wonderful dressing room I was part of.

"Thanks to all my team-mates for the affection they gave me from the first day, I always felt at home.

AC Milan have sacked technical director and former captain Paolo Maldini after four years in the role.

Maldini's time in the Rossoneri boardroom saw the Italian outfit claim their first Serie A title in 11 years in 2022 and reach this season's Champions League semi-finals.

A club statement read: "We thank him for his years of service in the role, contributing to the return to the Champions League and to winning the Scudetto in 2021-22. 

"His day-to-day duties will be performed by a team working in close integration with the first-team manager, ultimately reporting to the CEO."

The 54-year-old spent his entire playing career at the San Siro, making 901 appearances and winning 26 trophies.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti remains Brazil's No1 choice to take over as manager, their FA president has confirmed.

The Selecao are yet to appoint a permanent successor to Tite, who stepped down following a quarter-final exit to Croatia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Brazilian football confederation chief Ednaldo Rodrigues said he would use Brazil's upcoming friendlies in Europe to speak to the Italian coach and Real president Florentino Perez.

On the prospect of landing Ancelotti, Rodrigues said: "He remains the Plan A and in this trip with the selection in Europe we can have greater clarity."

Brazil face Guinea in Spain on June 17 before a clash with Senegal in Portugal three days later.
