Hammers want Lingard

West Ham have tabled an offer for Jesse Lingard to return to the London Stadium.

The departing Manchester United midfielder, 29, is set to become a free agent when his contract expires at Old Trafford on July 1.

Though he has struggled for opportunities with the Red Devils in recent years, Lingard enjoyed an outstanding loan with the Hammers during the second half of the 2020-21 campaign — netting nine times in 16 games.

Now David Moyes wants to bring him back to East London with the BBC suggesting a deal has been proposed to the England international.

Lingard, who has been pictured in New York and Paris in recent days, is said to be considering the offer.

Arsenal have officially completed the signing of American goalkeeper Matt Turner from MLS side New England Revolution.

Turner, 28, has established himself as USA’s first-choice stopper in the last 18 months and joins the Gunners on what is described as a long-term contract.

He becomes the club’s third addition of the summer after the arrivals of Brazilian winger Marquinhos and Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira.

Boss Mikel Arteta said: "Matt is an experienced goalkeeper who will bring high quality to our squad.

"He has shown with his performances in recent years in both the MLS and at international level with the United States that he is a goalkeeper who will give us added strength going into next season."

Turner will wear the number 30 shirt at the Emirates.

Red Devils return

Manchester United players have began reporting back to the club’s Carrington base for pre-season training.

David de Gea, Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek were some of the familiar faces checking in for a day of fitness testing before attending a first team meeting under new boss Erik ten Hag.

For many, it is a first opportunity to meet the 52-year-old former Ajax chief as he looks to lead the club back towards brighter days.

Some players will not return until a later date due to international commitments, with United’s first pre-season friendly seeing them face Liverpool in Bangkok on July 12.

Chelsea have announced that Petr Cech will stand down from his role as technical and performance advisor later this week.

The 40-year-old former goalkeeper has been a familiar face in the Blues' backroom setup for three years but has opted to move on after the recent change of ownership at Stamford Bridge.

Cech told Chelsea's website: "It has been a huge privilege to perform this role at Chelsea for the past three years.

"With the club under new ownership, I feel now is the right time for me to step aside. I am pleased that the club is now in an excellent position with the new owners, and I am confident of its future success both on and off the pitch."

Chairman and co-controlling owner Todd Boehly said: "Petr is an important member of the Chelsea family.

"We understand his decision to step away and thank him for his contributions as an advisor and his commitment to the club and to our community. We wish him the best."

Watford cancel Qatar clash

A friendly clash between Watford and Qatar’s national team scheduled for next month has been cancelled amid fury from fans.

The Hornets were due to play November’s World Cup hosts at the end of a five-day training camp in Austria.

However, the club’s Proud Hornets and Women of Watford supporters’ groups both expressed their dismay at the proposals due to Qatar’s human rights record and LBGT+ stance.

On Friday, a joint-statement from the two groups read: "We urge our team to display its support for all human rights, the LGBT+ community & women's rights at the game and will discuss this directly with the club."

In the end, Watford opted to cancel the fixture before any conversations took place.

A club spokesperson said: "The game was never finalised and it became abundantly clear this was a game not to play. As such, the schedule was revised."

Lucas heads home

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva has returned to his boyhood club Gremio to see out the remainder of his playing career.

Ex-Liverpool star Lucas, 35, has been plying his trade with Italian side Lazio since 2017 and made 35 Serie A appearances last term.

But he has made the emotional decision to leave Rome and return to his homeland where Gremio are looking to bounce back from a surprise relegation in 2021.
