Gav-a-go hero

Southampton have snapped up Republic of Ireland prodigy Gavin Bazunu from Manchester City for a reported £12million fee.

The stopper, 20, has already racked up 10 international caps and hopes to continue his development with regular football.

After sealing his switch on a five-year deal, Bazunu said: "I’m delighted to be here. It’s been in the works for a few weeks and I’m really happy that we’ve got everything over the line, and I’m just excited to see what’s ahead.

"I feel like it’s a place I can come and develop and learn my game. The biggest thing is opportunity — the fact that I can come here and have a chance to play regular football.

"Just to be given that opportunity to fight for my place is the biggest thing that I could’ve asked for."

The Saints have also brought in Polish goalkeeper Mateusz Lis on a five-year deal after his contract at Turkish side Altay SK expired.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “Mateusz is a player who has a lot of the right attributes we look for in a goalkeeper, and still with his best years ahead of him."

New Leeds star ready to Roc

New Leeds signing Marc Roca believes it was the right time for him to leave Bayern Munich after signing a four-year deal at Elland Road.

Spanish midfielder Roca, 25, made 24 appearances for the Bundesliga champions during a two-year stint but hopes to become a regular starter in Yorkshire.

He said: "It’s a good opportunity for me to be here and I’m very happy. You always know about Leeds and their history.

"It’s an incredible team and an incredible atmosphere at Elland Road. Everybody talks about it and I’m happy to be here."

The Whites are thought to have paid £10m to secure the former Espanyol midfielder, who becomes their third signing of the summer after Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen.

Brighton have announced the capture of Paraguayan striker Julio Enciso.

The 18-year-old South American has signed a four-year deal at the Amex and will link straight up with the Seagulls’ first-team squad in pre-season.

It is thought the South Coast club have paid around £9.5m for Enciso, who is already a full international and regarded in his home nation as their most exciting prospect in a generation.

Boss Graham Potter said: "Julio is an exciting young talent. He has had a great start to his career in Paraguay, as well as being a regular in the national squad.

"He’s a young guy who is moving away from his home country for the first time, so we will help him to adapt to new surroundings and settle here in Brighton."

Blackpool appoint Appleton

Blackpool have confirmed the appointment of Michael Appleton as their new manager.

The 46-year-old returns to the Bloomfield Road dugout nearly a decade on from his first stint, where he walked out to join their Lancashire rivals Blackburn after just 61 days in charge.

He replaces Neil Critchley after the former boss left to become Steven Gerrard's assistant head coach at Aston Villa a fortnight ago.

Appleton said: "This now feels like the right club at the right time.

"The fans will certainly have seen glimpses of what I tried to do in my days at Lincoln. I want to play aggressive, forward-thinking football and we have certain things that we want from the players when we’re playing, dependent on opposition clearly.

"We just want to be exciting and get people off their seats."

England’s Under-21s will face Germany at Bramall Lane on September 27.

The fixture, which comes four days after an away trip to Italy, will play a key part in Lee Carsley’s preparations for the 2023 European Under-21s Championship.

Carsley said: "England vs Germany is always a fixture to look forward to for any of our age groups and to be playing this latest chapter at a venue as historic as Bramall Lane will make this one all the more special."

Germany are the reigning European champions having lifted the trophy two years ago when England disappointingly exited in the group stage.
