Paolo's goal was better

Wilfried Gnonto shrugged off comparisons with fellow Italian Paolo Di Canio last night after netting a scissor-kick volley as Leeds beat Cardiff 5-2.

The in-form attacker impressed again to help his side book an FA Cup fourth round showdown with Boreham Wood or Accrington Stanley, who collide in a third round replay on Tuesday night. 

But Gnonto was quick to play down talk that the first of his two goals at Elland Road was reminiscent of Di Canio's sublime effort for West Ham in 2000 — three years before the 19-year-old was born. 

He said: "Yeah, I think his goal was better. I think so [but] I think mine was also good. 

"We wanted to start the game well and are happy we did it. We conceded two goals at the end but still did a great match. 

"We had a lot of chances, we could score even more, I could score even more. But yeah, we take the positives and try take it into Sunday [against Brentford]."

Patrick Bamford came off the bench to bag his own double against the Bluebirds but Gnonto is relishing the increased competition.

He added: "I think it is better for the team when we have all of these options. We just try to do our best."

No problem

Frank Lampard is confident Everton duo Yerry Mina and Anthony Gordon have not been affected by being confronted by unhappy fans last weekend. 

Following the 2-1 defeat to rock-bottom Southampton, Toffees stars were stopped in their cars outside Goodison Park by supporters angry at the prospect of a second successive battle to remain in the Premier League. 

Mina, 28, got out of his vehicle to speak with some but Gordon, 21, remained in his and attempted to drive through the crowd. 

Ahead of Saturday's crunch clash at West Ham, Lampard was asked what impact the confrontations had had on his players. He said: "Nothing as far as I know. I've spoken to them both. 

"I've been in football a long time and I've been at teams where similar things have happened to myself and other players, so let's not make this an Everton conversation. 

"Now everything gets videoed and becomes viral like it happens every day and that's not necessarily the case. 

"I know the majority of Evertonians just want this team to do well, and they have a right to voice an opinion, but of course we don't want fans going up to the players. 

"I think it is a small minority. We don't want that and I’d love to not see that again. But I also understand passionate fans and what they want."

Carney wants more

Carney Chukwuemeka is determined to become a regular feature in Graham Potter's side after making his first start for Chelsea in last Sunday's 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. 

The 19-year-old attacker, who joined the Blues from Aston Villa in August 2022, had been used as an impact sub before the London derby at Stamford Bridge. 

He was delighted to play his part as Kai Havertz's fine header lifted the pressure and secured a much-needed win for the beleaguered hosts. 

And Chukwuemeka is hoping to make Potter's starting line-up once again when Chelsea travel to Liverpool on Saturday. 

He said: "I couldn't wait to get on the pitch and it was a good first start experience for me. From the warm-up, from when I knew I was starting, I was buzzing already.

"I'm loving it at the minute and long may it continue."

Anfield attraction

Liverpool have added a new attraction to their iconic home in the shape of The Anfield Abseil. 

Launched by Reds stars Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota and Calvin Ramsey, the exhilarating new challenge offers fans the opportunity to experience the stadium from a different perspective as they drop 100ft down the side of the 21,000-seater Main Stand. 

Seven-game ban

The French Football Federation have slapped a SEVEN-MATCH ban on Manchester United loanee Eric Bailly. 

Centre-back Bailly, who is on loan at Marseille this season, was red-carded for a kung-fu kick during a 2-0 win over amateur side Hyeres in the French Cup earlier this month. 

Almike Moussa N'Diaye was carried off on a stretcher after the horror challenge saw the 28-year-old defender's boot crunch into his chest. 

Following a brief spell in intensive care at a hospital close to the Francis-Turcan stadium in Martigues, N'Diaye was transferred to another medical facility 25 miles away in Marseille.

Bailly has already sat out two Ligue 1 matches following the incident. 

Staying put

Loris Karius will remain at Newcastle for the rest of the season after the club extended his deal. 

The German keeper, 29, initially joined the Magpies on a short-term basis in September 2022 with an option to stay at St James' Park until June 2023. 

And Karis, who previously played for Mainz, Liverpool, Besiktas and Union Berlin, will now remain part of Eddie Howe's squad as Toon push for a place in Europe.
