Haaland the supersub?

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has hinted he may rest Erling Haaland for tonight's home clash with Nottingham Forest.

Haaland, 22, has already bagged six goals in four Premier League outings for the champions.

But Guardiola is seemingly ready to bench the Norwegian goal machine to ensure he is in peak condition when City open their Champions League campaign next week.

Speaking ahead of this evening's match, the tactical mastermind made it clear he would not break down his selection decisions to Haaland or anyone else.

Guardiola said: "No, I’m not going to explain. I don’t explain the reasons for my decisions because I will not convince them.

"Some players understand and some will never understand me.

"I don’t care. I do my best for the team, to win games and for many reasons. That’s all. I’m the manager and I decide.

"I am being paid for that and they have to accept my decisions."

Azpi knows what Chelsea need

Cesar Azpilicueta wants Chelsea to work even harder to get back to winning ways

Skipper Cesar Azpilicueta is desperate for Chelsea to find some consistency and get their season back on track.

The Blues have picked up just seven points from their opening five Premier League games, with last night's defeat at Southampton their second reverse of the campaign.

And with the pressure mounting on boss Thomas Tuchel, Azpilicueta has called upon his team-mates to work even harder to turn things around.

He said: "We have to be honest with ourselves. We know that we can be better and from there we have to work hard — we need to get back to winning ways.

"We came back from a defeat against Leeds and we turned things around against Leicester, yet at Southampton we lost. We are inconsistent and we need to find consistency.

"It is pretty obvious we are conceding too many goals and we make it very difficult for ourselves every game.

"The Premier League is tougher and tougher. We know how it works in this competition and when we concede so many goals, we make it more difficult.

"We are a team that will reflect on what we do and what we can improve as a group and individually."

The Blues host London rivals West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Equaliser frustrates Wilf

Wilfried Zaha could not hide his disappointment after Yoane Wissa cancelled out his stunning second-half strike to deny Crystal Palace three points against Brentford.

Zaha, 29, broke the deadlock just before the hour mark last night but the Eagles had to settle for a draw when Bees substitute Wissa headed home Vitaly Janelt's inswinging cross two minutes from time.

Speaking after the match at Selhurst Park, the frustrated Ivory Coast international said: "Just one lapse in concentration ruins all the hard work.

"We literally just had to keep it tight. As soon as we went into the lead, we just started to defend. I don't see why we do that.

"If we'd just continued to press on, I feel like we could have got a second and ended the game. We just killed ourselves in the end."

New arrival

Wolves have signed Austrian international Sasa Kalajdzic, subject to a visa and work permit.

The 6ft 7in striker, 25, completed his medical in the Midlands earlier today and joins the club on a five-year-deal.

Kalajdzic, who has been capped 15 times by his country, moves to Molineux on the back of two full Bundesliga seasons where he finished as Stuttgart’s leading scorer each time, hitting 23 goals in total.

Wolves technical director Scott Sellars said: "We are very happy to secure the signing of Sasa, who is a talented young striker, has many excellent attributes to his game and fits the profile we have been looking for this summer.

"Sasa has had great success in the Bundesliga and we are looking forward to seeing what he can do in the Premier League."

Ful of praise

Bernd Leno has hailed Aleksandar Mitrovic as Fulham’s most important player.

Mitrovic, 27, bagged his fifth goal in as many games as the Cottagers beat Brighton 2-1 last night.

And goalkeeper Leno, who arrived at Craven Cottage from Arsenal earlier this summer, believes his team-mate will keep finding the back of the net.

He said: "He’s full of confidence and full of quality. The way he plays and keeps the ball and the way he scores goals is exceptional.

"He’s so important for us — probably the most important player for us — so we’re really happy to have him here.

"I spoke to the Arsenal guys a couple of days ago and they said, ‘He so tough to play against’.

"We’re so happy to have him."

Bridge of cheers

Pernille Harder cannot wait for Chelsea to tackle West Ham at Stamford Bridge on September 11.

The reigning Women's Super League champions normally play their home games at Kingsmeadow in Kingston upon Thames.

But the London derby with the Hammers has been switched to the Bridge to allow more fans to watch Emma Hayes' side in action in their WSL opener.

Danish ace Harder, 29, said: "I am looking forward to the new season so much.

"First of all for the season and then to play at Stamford Bridge, which will be unbelievable. It will be my first time."
