Neil in talks with Stoke

Sunderland head coach Alex Neil has entered into talks with Stoke regarding their managerial vacancy.

Neil, 41, guided the Black Cats back into the Championship following their relegation from England's second division in 2018.

A club statement said: "Sunderland can confirm that Alex Neil has entered into discussions with Stoke regarding their current managerial vacancy.

"Following a formal approach by Stoke, the club is contractually obliged to permit the head coach to start a dialogue with the Potters.

"The club is committed to retaining Alex’s services as head coach and will be making no further comment at this moment in time."

Sunderland fans will be hopeful that they can keep hold of the man that guided them to victory in last season's play-off final.

Scott Arfield has expressed his excitement for Rangers' upcoming group games in the Champions League.

The Scottish side were drawn into Group A alongside Ajax, Liverpool and Napoli after edging PSV in the play-off round.

But Arfield is relishing the opportunity, particularly the British battle at Anfield.

He said: "The three of them are amazing, amazing cities, so we’re definitely looking forward to going to them, but the one that captures the attention is the Liverpool one because it’s closer to home and we know our following there is going to be sensational.

"That’s the one we’re probably looking forward to the most. They have been finalists for numerous years and they’re one of the best teams in the world, and now we can show what we’re all about.

"It’s an exciting draw for everybody and we want to be as competitive as possible."

Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon was hit by a coin in the Europa League play-off defeat to FC Zurich on Thursday night.

Gordon, 39, went down holding the back of his head as he prepared to take a free-kick in front of the travelling away fans at Tynecastle.

After the game, the stopper spoke out about the incident, condemning the actions coming from the supporters of the Swiss champions.

He said: "There’s absolutely no excuse for it. The players were out there putting on a great show — it was a really good game, really competitive, and we don’t need to be facing that as well.

"I got hit by something on the back of the head. It’s not ideal to be facing that when you’re on the pitch – it can be dangerous, so that’s disappointing.

"It’s disappointing. I hope we can all of a sudden put a stop to it but it’s very difficult."

Hearts lost 3-1 on aggregate and will drop into the Europa Conference League for the 2022-23 campaign.

David Moyes has hinted that Gianluca Scamacca could be in line for his first Premier League start this weekend.

The Italian striker, signed from Sassuolo this summer, has already scored two goals for the Hammers.

Although both have come in their Europa Conference League play-off, where the East London side comfortably progressed.

After impressing in the 3-0 second-leg win against Viborg in Denmark last night, Moyes has conceded that his No7 is close to a starting spot.

The Irons boss said: "I thought Gianluca did a lot of good things.

"Again, we can’t be expecting too much from him too soon. We need to give him a chance to get ready, but he certainly did a great job for us.

"Look, he scored two goals for us in two games, so he’s certainly getting a lot closer to being ready to play now."

West Ham face Aston Villa on Sunday where they will be hoping to end their winless run in the league.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has backed Manchester United to challenge for silverware this season, despite their mixed start.

Saints will face United at St Mary's on Saturday, with Erik ten Hag's side fresh off a huge win over Liverpool.

Before that, the Red Devils had lost their opening two games, but Hasenhuttl has backed the new identity introduced by the former Ajax coach.

He said: "This is a team that has a new manager — it is not surprising that it doesn’t work immediately everything perfectly.

"I see a very clear identity of what they’re doing now, what they want to do now.

"You are speaking still about a top team that is going for titles and will also do this this season.

"If you beat Liverpool, this is a big sign, a big message to everybody that they are definitely in a good way and I see the clear identity of what they want to do and after all the problems they had.

"We are definitely facing a very strong team here and in the end it’s up to us to keep on going in the way we want to go."
