Euro 2020: Your ultimate guide to the quarter-finals

Suddenly we’re down to the last eight at the European Championship and the competition has been blown wide open.

Favourites France were dramatically knocked out by Switzerland in the last 16 while England also advanced by knocking out Germany.

Ahead of the last eight getting started, we’ve compiled the ultimate guide to the quarter-finals.

July 2 — Match 45: Switzerland 1-1 (1-3 pens) Spain

After penalty shoot-out glory in the round of 16, Switzerland were eliminated by the same method at the quarter-final stage after drawing 1-1 with Spain.

Denis Zakaria put through his own net after just eight minutes to hand Spain the lead in Saint Petersburg.

But Swiss talisman Xherdan Shaqiri levelled in the 68th minute, seizing on a defensive mix-up between Aymeric Laporte and Pau Torres.

Nine minutes after providing the assist for Shaqiri, Remo Freuler was sent off for a poor challenge, leaving the Swiss facing 30 additional minutes with 10 men.

Spain passed up chances to win it, sending the game to penalties. Sergio Busquets missed La Roja's first kick before Fabian Schar, Manuel Akanji and Ruben Vargas failed for Switzerland.

Gerard Moreno and Mikel Oyarzarbal converted to send Luis Enrique's side into the semi-finals. 

La Roja followed their 5-0 win over Slovakia with a thrilling 5-3 victory against Croatia in the round of 16.

Mario Pasalic forced 30 minutes of extra-time by scoring deep in stoppage time to tie the game up at 3-3.

But Spain had too much quality in the end, with goals from Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal finishing the plucky Croatians off in one of the games of the tournament.

July 2 — Match 46: Belgium 1-2 Italy

The No1 ranked side in the world are out of Euro 2020 as Roberto Mancini's Italian side march on, and they don't look like stopping any time soon.

It was an absorbing quarter-final in Munich, and one that the Azzurri thought they had taken the lead in within 15 minutes, only for Leonardo Bonucci's effort to be ruled out for offside.

However, they took the lead on the half-hour mark, when Inter Milan's Nicolo Barella left a couple of defenders in is wake before firing home.

It was two shortly before the break, when Lorenzo Insigne hit a beauty past a helpless Thibaut Courtois in the Belgian goal.

The Red Devils were handed a lifeline in first half stoppage time when Romelu Lukaku slotted home from the spot after a contentious penalty decision went his nations way.

Belgium rallied and had several golden opportunities in the second half, top-scorer Lukaku struck the upright from all of two yards. 

Minutes later, substitute Nacer Chadli had a low cross deflected out of Gianluigi Donnarumma's reach, but Lukaku and Thorgan Hazard couldn't convert with the goal gaping.

Italy extend their unbeaten run to 32 matches and will face Spain at Wembley on Tuesday in the first semi-final.

July 3 — Match 47: Czech Republic 1-2 Denmark

Denmark advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Czech Republic 2-1 in Baku.

The Danes took the lead in the fifth minute courtesy of a Thomas Delaney header from a corner.

It looked to be plain sailing for Kasper Hjulmand's side, as Kasper Dolberg made it 2-0 with a volley just before half time.

Their momentum was halted early in the second half, as Patrick Schick scored his fifth goal of the tournament, drawing him level with Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Golden Boot.

The Danes, however, held their nerve to see out the victory. They will play England in the semi-finals.

July 3 — Match 48: Ukraine 0-4 England

England have advanced to the semi-finals of the Euros for the first time in 25 years after thrashing Ukraine 4-0.

Harry Kane opened the scoring in the first five minutes to settle Gareth Southgate's side's nerves.

Harry Maguire then scored a resounding header just a minute into the second half.

Soon after, Kane grabbed his second of the game, taking his tournament tally to three goals with a header.

Substitute Jordan Henderson rounded off the performance with a glancing header from a corner.

It is Denmark next up for Southgate's side on Wednesday night at Wembley.
