Chelsea closed in on a fourth successive Women’s Super League title as first-half goals from Guro Reiten and skipper Magda Eriksson earned them a 2-0 win over Arsenal.

Reiten put the Blues ahead with a 22nd-minute strike before Eriksson — who earlier in the week had announced she will be leaving the club at the end of the season — added a second just before the break.

Boss Emma Hayes was delighted to see her captain get on the scoresheet during her final home appearance at Kingsmeadow.

She said: "Magda deserves it. She has been so pivotal to our success.

"For her to get that moment in her final home game, in front of the fans she loves, nothing will mean more to her."

Katie McCabe had the chance to pull a goal back for the Gunners with a penalty on the hour but put it wide as Hayes’ side went five points clear of Manchester United at the top.

However, the gap was narrowed when United saw off rivals Manchester City 2-1 later in the day.

Marc Skinner's team secured maximum points with a last-gasp goal to put the Blues' title celebrations on hold.

But Hayes can secure yet another WSL title by ensuring the Londoners avoid defeat against Reading on the final day of the season.
